Running a business includes a lot of decisions, and one choice is which credit card to use. The best cash back business credit cards give you the opportunity to earn industry-leading cash back on every purchase, whether you prefer the flexibility of a flat-rate cash back card or the rewards opportunities associated with a bonus category cash back card.

Each of the best cash back business cards has its pros and cons, and each comes with a slightly different rewards structure. Some cards offer higher cash back rates in exchange for an annual fee, for example, and other cards eliminate the annual fee but limit how much you can earn in the bonus cash back categories. Depending on your business, this minor decision of which credit card to get could potentially matter to the tune of hundreds of dollars or more in rewards.

We’ve selected four of the best cash back credit cards for business and provided an in-depth look at each card’s pros and cons – as well as our thoughts on which business credit card might be the best option for your business.

American Express Blue Business Cash™ Card: Best no-annual-fee cash back card

Pros and cons

The American Express Blue Business Cash™ Card offers some of the highest flat-rate cash back rewards in the industry – and it does so without charging cardholders an annual fee. This makes the Amex Blue Business Cash one of the best business credit cards for cash back, hands down.

Unfortunately, this Amex card’s 2% cash back rate only applies to the first $50,000 in business spending per calendar year; everything after that only earns 1% cash back, which could make this card less attractive to small-business owners who are hoping to put a lot of business expenses on credit.

The Amex Blue Business Cash now offers a welcome bonus, which is one more reason in this card’s favor. New cardholders will also be able to take advantage of 12 months of 0% intro APR on purchases (13.24% to 19.24% variable after that) – which might be what you’re really looking for in a business credit card.

Why we like this card

If you want a business credit card that earns 2% cash back with no annual fee, the American Express Blue Business Cash Card is a great option. Many small-business owners will be able to take advantage of the Amex Blue Business Cash’s high cash back percentage without worrying about whether their business is going to exceed $50,000 in credit card spending in a single year – and if your small business is likely to hit the Amex 2% cash back cap, you’re probably earning and spending at a level that can justify a credit card with an annual fee.

Capital One Spark Cash for Business: Best unlimited cash back card

Pros and cons

The Capital One Spark Cash for Business offers unlimited 2% cash back on all purchases, making it one of the best cash back cards for business spending. That said, the Spark Cash is the only one of the top cash back cards on our list to charge an annual fee – $95 per year (waived the first year) – which could be an issue for small-business owners who are watching every penny.

The Capital One Spark Cash for Business also comes with a higher APR than the other cards on our list: 20.99% variable APR, as compared to the 13.24% to 19.24% variable APRs offered by its competitors. On the plus side, the Spark Cash’s sign-up bonus is a little better than the bonuses offered by the other cards on our list; you’ll earn $500 after spending $4,500 in the first three months, which comes out to $1.11 in bonus cash back for every $10 spent. (Compared to the two Chase cards that made our list, which each calculate out to $1 cash back per $10 spent to get the welcome bonus.)

Why we like this card

If you want unlimited 2% cash back rewards, the Capital One Spark Cash for Business is your best business credit card option. Yes, you’ll have to pay an annual fee to take advantage of these cash back rewards, but the $95 fee is waived the first year, plus you can offset the cost of future annual fees by earning the Spark Cash’s $500 welcome bonus.

Ink Business Unlimited® Credit Card: Best unlimited cash back card with no annual fee

Pros and cons

The Ink Business Unlimited® Credit Card only offers 1.5% cash back on purchases – but it’s an unlimited 1.5% cash back, and you won’t have to pay an annual fee for the privilege.

If you’re thinking about doing the math to figure out whether the Ink Business Unlimited or the Amex Blue Business Cash is the best no-annual-fee cash back card for your business, remember that the Amex’s 2% cash back tops out at $50,000 in spending per calendar year. The Ink Business Unlimited’s 1.5% cash back, however, is unlimited.

Plus, even though both the Amex Blue Business Cash and the Ink Business Unlimited card offer an intro APR on purchases and a welcome bonus, the Ink Business Unlimited offers a sign-up bonus of $750 after spending $7,500 in the first three months. That is a much higher bonus but also a much higher spending threshold needed which should be taken into account. That bonus could be the number you need to help you make your decision.

Why we like this card

We like to call the Ink Business Unlimited Card a “set it and forget it” card. What does that mean? If you’re a small-business owner who wants unlimited flat-rate cash back on all purchases without having to worry about an annual fee, all you have to do is apply for the Ink Business Unlimited. Once your credit card is in place, you won’t have to worry about spending caps, cash back categories, annual fees or anything else besides earning your sign-up bonus and growing your business.

Ink Business Cash® Credit Card: Best bonus category cash back card

Pros and cons

The Ink Business Cash® Credit Card offers 5% cash back on internet, cable and phone services, and office supply store purchases, for up to $25,000 in purchases per year. Cardholders also earn 2% cash back on gas and restaurant purchases, for up to $25,000 per year. This makes the Ink Business Cash one of the best cash back cards for business owners who spend a lot of money on telecommunications and office supplies, not to mention gas and dining.

That said, not everybody likes the limitations that come with a bonus category cash back card – not only in terms of which expenses are eligible for which rewards, but also the fact that all purchases that don’t earn bonus category rewards only qualify for 1% cash back.

Of course, you’re probably going to like the Ink Business Cash’s sign-up bonus: $750 after spending $7,500 in the first three months. This is the same bonus offered by the Ink Business Unlimited credit card – and it’s worth noting that although both bonuses are lower in terms of bonus earned versus dollar spent compared to the welcome bonus offered by the Capital One Spark Cash for Business, neither of the Ink Business cards charge an annual fee. For some small-business owners, saving the $95 annual fee on the Capital Spark could make the difference.

Why we like this card

If your small business spends most of its money on internet, cable and phone services, or office supplies, the Ink Business Cash card’s 5% cash back offer can help you get the most bang for your buck. Plus, you’ll be able to earn 2% cash back on gas and dining, which is a great way to justify turning that next business meeting into a business lunch. Add in a $750 sign-up bonus and remove the annual fee, and you’ve got yourself one of the best cash back business credit cards.

Why get a business cash back card

Small-business owners have two main options when it comes to business rewards credit cards: cash back cards and travel rewards cards. While there’s an advantage to carrying a top business travel card such as the The Business Platinum Card® from American Express, not all small-business owners do a lot of business travel – and some of the best business travel cards, including the Amex Business Platinum, have extremely high annual fees.

On the other hand, nearly every small-business owner can benefit from cash back rewards. And by applying for one of the best cash back business cards, you give yourself the opportunity to earn great cash back rewards on every purchase. If this is your first business credit card, you’ll be able to start building a positive business credit history and help your business boost its credit score.

Remember, you can carry both a business cash back card and a business travel card – and you can always upgrade to one of those premium travel credit cards once your small business is bringing in enough revenue to justify the annual fee. Until then, give yourself the opportunity to earn flexible cash back rewards by getting one of the best cash back cards for small-business owners – and learn first-hand how a top business credit card can help your business grow.

Who should and shouldn’t get the American Express Business Gold

The American Express Business Gold Credit Card is right in the middle of American Express’ business credit card offerings – it’s not the most premium credit card on Amex’s list, but it isn’t an entry-level credit card either.
