  • How to maximize sign-up bonuses

We’ll show you how sign-up bonuses work, what to look for, and what’s best for your lifestyle:

How sign-up bonuses work

Sign-up bonuses are often affiliated with rewards credit cards, which can include cash back cards, co-branded travel cards or general-purpose travel cards. Here’s how they work: You are accepted by the card issuer to hold the card, and you’re given a certain amount of time to spend a specified minimum. In exchange you get a bonus of cash, points or miles that you can use toward travel, shopping, statement credits, gift cards and more.

Choosing a card with a sign-up bonus

  • What type do you want? Sign-up bonuses come in different flavors. From cashback cards with cash sign-up bonuses to travel cards with miles sign-up bonuses, there are plenty of options.
  • Is there an annual fee? Some of the best cashback credit cards with sign-up bonuses have no annual fee, so pay attention to that. That said, an annual fee can be indicative of a lucrative bonus. Look at the bonus as well as the ongoing rewards and figure out how much you will likely spend on the card.
  • Will you spend the minimum? No matter how generous the sign-up bonus, it’s pointless if you can’t meet the minimum spend by the deadline, typically 3 months or 90 days after beginning your card membership.
  • Will you use the points or miles? If you opt for a co-branded travel rewards card, make sure you will actually use the points or miles. Otherwise, it’s best to get a general-purpose travel card or a cashback card.

Sign-up bonus factors

  • The amount of the required spend
  • Its deadline
  • The amount of the bonus
  • The ongoing rewards
  • Its annual fee
  • Your spending habits

What is a spending requirement?

The best credit card sign-up bonuses offer at least 5-figure deals for 40,000, 50,000, sometimes even 80,000 points or miles. The trick is to pay what is called the spending requirement before the offer ends. Spending requirements can be for $500 and up; the requirement depends on the value of the offer. Here’s how it works: The Chase Sapphire Preferred sign-up bonus offer requires you to spend $4,000 within the first 3 months of card membership. If you do, you earn 50,000 points that you can use toward travel or in other ways.

Intro spending periods for bonus

Intro spending periods on credit card sign-up bonuses are typically for 3 months or 90 days, but they can sometimes be for 6 months. Here’s how it works: You have a set amount of time to spend a minimum. In exchange for spending that money, you are awarded points or miles that can be used toward shopping and travel. Cashback cards will also sometimes have sign-up bonuses.

How to maximize sign-up bonuses

  • Strategically acquire cards. The easiest and fastest way to amass points or miles is through card acquisition. Just be mindful to avoid applying for multiple cards at once, because that can impact your credit score, and you may not get what you have applied for.
  • Watch out for rich offers. Cards often change their offers, sometimes even doubling the sign-up bonus. For example, in 2016, there was a Chase Sapphire Reserve sign-up bonus of 100,000 points, although it’s now 50,000 points.
  • Having miles isn’t enough. It’s important to have a plan for using them, because in some cases, you can lose them from inactivity. If you’re not sure about whether you’ll use the miles, look at cashback cards, such as the Chase Freedom, which often have sign-up cash bonuses.
  • Stay mindful of the annual fee. Is it waived the first year? Will you spend enough to recoup miles to be used?
  • Use the cards correctly. Another critical aspect of acquiring a new card is planning how you’ll use it. For this, you can use our Wallet app, which guides you through which card to use for which purchases.
