New bonus categories

With the refresh, the Blue Cash Preferred card no longer offers a bonus at U.S. department stores – which could be a major disappointment if you spend a large amount on clothing, household appliances and other department store purchases each year.

However, the addition of the streaming subscriptions and transit categories offer great opportunity to earn a generous rewards rate on more than 20 streaming services, including Hulu, Netflix, HBO, NBA League Pass, Apple Music and more, as well as a variety of transit services, such as public transportation, tolls, parking, rideshares, taxis and trains.

Note, if you applied for the Blue Cash Preferred card prior to May 9, you will continue to earn a 3-percent cash back bonus at select U.S. department stores until July 31.

Blue Cash Everyday vs. Blue Cash Preferred

The Blue Cash Preferred and Blue Cash Everyday cards both offer high rates of cash back on gas and groceries. But if you’re avoiding the Preferred version due to its $95 fee, we think you should give the card a second look.
