Comparing USAA Credit Card Offers

One of the largest insurance companies in the U.S., USAA also offers a wide range of financial products, including credit cards. Whether you are looking for home or auto insurance or a card to help you build credit, USAA is great for the military family. However, if you have no tie to the military, you might need to look elsewhere for these products. But read on, because you may be pleasantly surprised about whether you qualify. Here, we look at:

Here are the best USAA credit cards:

Details on the best USAA cards

USAA® Preferred Cash Rewards Visa Signature®

This card's best feature is its 1.5% cash back on all purchases. There's unlimited cash back, and there are special features for military members, which we explain later.

Highlights

  • No foreign transaction fees
  • No annual fee
  • Free credit score

USAA Rewards™ American Express®

With one of the best year-round rates for the restaurant category, this card earns you 3X points on restaurants, as well as 2X points on gas and groceries. It's 1X point on all other purchases. One advantage: There are no rotating categories or required quarterly sign-ups. Also, you earn 2,500 points with your first purchase.

Highlights

  • No annual fee
  • No foreign transaction fee
  • No penalty APR or over-limit fees

USAA Rewards™ Visa Signature®

If you have a tendency to carry a balance, this card can help, with its variable ongoing APR starting at 11.65%, although it goes to 27.65%, so it's worth your while to have excellent credit so you can fully benefit from that low rate.

The USAA Rewards Visa Signature also offers 2X points on dining and gas, and 1X point on all other purchases. There's also a 2,500-point bonus after your first purchase.

Highlights

  • No annual fee
  • No penalty APR
  • No foreign transaction fee

USAA Secured Card American Express®

If you're looking to build credit, but your credit isn't its best, the USAA Secured Card American Express might be a good choice. With an annual fee of $35, and no penalty APR or over-limit fee, this card is great for the consumer with bad credit. While the variable rate starts at only 11.65% APR (up to 21.65% APR), it's not the best idea to carry a balance with this card. Instead, pay in full and on time each month so you can build your credit and eventually graduate to a rewards card.

Highlights

  • No foreign transaction fee
  • No penalty APR
  • Free credit score

USAA card benefits for military members and their families

There are special benefits military members get through their USAA credit cards:

You can get 4% APR on all balances accrued prior to entering active duty service. The rate will last until the end of your active duty period. After that, the variable Regular APR will apply. This is better than the 6% rate that the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act provides to active-duty service members. Eligible active-duty members can also apply for special rates and other benefits on their USAA credit card for current balances, new purchases and even cash advances when they deploy or PCS.
