Making the most of your credit cards

Don’t love your current card? Maybe you want better rewards. Or perhaps there’s a balance sneaking up on you that you need to wrangle under control. The best credit cards don’t necessarily have the highest annual fees – or no annual fee at all. It all depends on what you want to accomplish financially.

But which is the best? Learn the host of factors that weigh into what makes a great credit card. Here, we look at:

  • What factors to consider when choosing the best credit card.
  • Main categories of credit card benefits to think about when choosing.
  • Most valuable rewards you can get with your credit card.
  • Typical fees and rates to watch out for.
  • When is it worth having a fee?
  • Maximizing the perks of a credit card.
  • How to find my credit score?
  • How many credit cards should i have?
  • Best Credit Cards Recap

Here’s what you need to know:

What factors to consider when choosing the best credit card

  1. Want to build credit? Most credit cards, including cards for authorized users, allow you to build credit. But check with the card issuer to make sure they’ll report your credit habits to the 3 major credit bureaus.
  2. Paying a lot of interest fees? A balance transfer card helps take away the sharp edges of credit card debt, although you still need to pay off the balance before the 0% intro APR offer ends.
  3. Credit not its best? Cards for consumers with bad or thin credit can help with this.
  4. Willing to strategize your spending? A couple of cards offer quarterly categories of 5% cash back – such categories as home improvement stores, wholesale clubs and Amazon.com. Load up on spending each quarter for rotating categories.
  5. Specific categories you often use? Some cards, such as the Amex Blue Cash cards, offer improved rewards year-round on such categories as U.S. gas stations and U.S. groceries.
  6. Want to use it and forget it? For those of us who don’t want to think about our shopping rewards, some travel and cashback cards reward at a flat rate for all spending.
  7. Travel your thing? If you plan to travel often (or even occasionally), some cards reward for worldwide travel and restaurants, such as the Chase Sapphire cards. Flat rate travel cards are also available.
  8. Have a favorite brand? Express yourself with a card that delivers miles for using your hotel or airline brand of choice.

Main categories of credit card benefits to think about when choosing

Travel

  • Annual airline credit
  • Car rental loss and damage insurance
  • Roadside service
  • Travel accident insurance

Shopping

  • Extended warranty
  • Purchase protection
  • 2-day shipping on eligible items
  • Concierge

Fees

  • Late payment won’t increase your APR, and there’s no late fee
  • No foreign transaction fee
  • No annual fee
  • No overlimit fee

Miscellaneous

  • Free FICO or VantageScore credit scores
  • Redeem your cash back at any amount
  • Access to exclusive events
  • Year-end summary
  • Alerts if your Social Security number shows up on suspicious sites

Most valuable rewards you can get with your credit card

  1. Sign-up bonus. As a new cardholder, you can earn hundreds of dollars after a required spend.
  2. Purchase rewards in miles, points or cash back. With a card that suits your spending habits, you can earn back credits worth hundreds.
  3. Points for travel, gift cards, merchandise or entertainment. Rather than a statement credit, get gift cards and more.
  4. Percentage boost for use of issuer’s travel portal. Some cards reward you for using the card issuer’s travel portal to do your travel shopping.
  5. Special benefits. At member hotels, you can get such benefits as early check-in and late check-out, as well as free breakfast and room upgrades.
  6. Access to special events. Some cards give you access to sporting, theater and dining events, as well as other experiences.

Typical fees and rates to watch out for

  • Annual fee. This can go into the hundreds of dollars, but it’s sometimes waived the first year.
  • Foreign transaction fee.Typically 3%, but sometimes there’s no foreign transaction fee, so check.
  • Late fee. Can be up to $38 for failing to pay on time.
  • Balance transfer fee. Typically a fee of $5-$10 or 3%-5%, whichever is greater. Occasionally this fee is waived when you transfer a balance to a new card.
  • Returned payment. If you attempt to pay a credit card bill with a check that does not clear, fees can run up to $38.
  • Overlimit fee. This is often waived, but you can run the risk of having your limit lowered or the account even closed if you abuse the terms of the contract.
  • Cash advance. This can be up to $10 or 8% of the amount advanced, whichever is greater.
  • Processing fee. These can be charged by credit-builder cards.
  • Additional card fee. Credit-builder cards sometimes have added, unspecified fees, but they are required to post them clearly in the “Rates & Fees” link provided on the card’s landing page.
  • Variable or fixed APR. Each month that you carry a balance, you face an interest charge.
  • Penalty APR. Can be applied if you make a late payment or a payment is returned.
  • Cash advance APR. Applied when you take out cash.
  • APR for balance transfers. This might be 0% for a limited time, up to 21 months, then it reverts to a higher rate.

When is it worth having a fee?

Rarely do you want to incur fees on your credit card – it often means that you have paid late or have overextended and taken out a cash advance. Remember, credit cards should be used for credit building, convenience and earning rewards. Otherwise, you are putting money on the table that doesn’t need to be there.

However, there are a couple of times when it might be worth your while to pay a fee associated with a credit card. For example, you might find a strong balance transfer offer with a balance transfer fee that’s better than an offer with no balance transfer fee. Yes, you are paying up to 5% for the honor of transferring the balance, but the interest charges you’ll save might make it worth it. Also, annual fees may still be worth the cost if it’s a card you plan to use often enough to counterbalance the cost of the fee.

Maximizing the perks of a credit card

  1. Choose carefully. Pick a card with a points, miles or cashback system you’ll love. Or maybe you need a credit-builder card or a balance transfer card.
  2. Check valuation. All rewards aren’t created equal. Check how the points are valued.
  3. Compare sign-up bonuses and ongoing rewards. And make sure they are rewards you’ll use.
  4. Use with care. Not only do you need to make sure the annual fee won’t be a burden, but you need to promise yourself you won’t pay late or carry a balance. Otherwise you defeat the purpose of having a rewards card or balance transfer card.
  5. Identify benefits. Need rental car insurance? Want to relax in the airport lounge? Be mindful of what cards offer besides miles or cash back.
  6. Spend. Whether you have a credit-builder card or a rewards card, you’ll want to make sure you use the card to keep the account active, and in the case of rewards, you maximize your points by making purchases you can pay off by month-end.

How to find your credit score

Lenders make a ruling on your creditworthiness based on your credit score. It’s how they decide which lending products to give you. Here are some ways to access your score:

  1. Get your Vantage Score for free through creditcards.com. Vantage follows 6 criteria, including on-time payments and available credit. You can also get your TransUnion credit report free through creditcards.com.
  2. Enjoy getting your score for free. Many credit card issuers offer free access to your credit score as a benefit of holding one of their cards. If this is a deal-breaker, find out which cards you are looking at might offer credit scores. Many offer the score once a month.
  3. Access your FICO score. The dominant scoring model, FICO sells its scores for about $20 each. There are three scores available, one for each of the major credit bureaus – TransUnion, Experian and Equifax. There is no need to check all three simultaneously.

How many credit cards should I hold?

Ideally, you should hold at least 2 credit cards, each from a different, major network (American Express, Visa, Mastercard or Discover). According to a 2017 Experian survey, the average American holds almost 4 cards, and 62% reported having between 1 and 5 cards. (Experian is one of the 3 major credit bureaus.) And according to dominant scoring model FICO, “high achievers” (Americans with a score of 785 or above) possess an average of 7 credit cards, based on a 2012 report. What’s best for you? It depends on your rewards needs and how many you can manage at once. You don’t want so many that you forget a bill, for example. Yet, you want to maximize rewards by having cashback or travel cards that you will actually use, potentially saving hundreds, even thousands of dollars a year.
