Like other credit cards in the retail category, the Sony PlayStation card caters to a specific group: Fans of PlayStation and Sony products. No annual fee, a fair APR compared to other retail cards and special savings on deals and experiences round out the card’s best features.

Great rewards on PlayStation and Sony products

Where the Sony PlayStation card really shines, unsurprisingly, is with stellar 5:1 rewards on PlayStation Store and Sony purchases. So, if you tend to wait in long lines for the latest and greatest gaming console, your chances of benefiting from adding this card to your collection are high. You may want to consider paying your cell phone bill with the card, too, to snag an easy 3 points per dollar on spending you already make every month.

However, purchases made anywhere else earn a mere 1 point per dollar. If you’re looking to earn greater rewards on everyday purchases — while still avoiding an annual fee — consider a general rewards card such as the Capital One Quicksilver Cash Rewards Credit Card (which offers unlimited 1.5 percent cash back on every purchase) or the Citi® Double Cash Card (which pays 1 percent cash back when you make a purchase and another 1 percent as you make payments for those purchases).

Fair sign-up bonus

The Sony PlayStation card offers a reasonable sign-up bonus of 5,000 points for new cardholders after making their first purchase in the first 90 days of account opening. While this is not the highest sign-up bonus you’ll find on a rewards card, it is very easy to earn. Most introductory offers require cardholders to meet a high spend threshold before awarding points.

Small window for intro APR

While it’s unlikely you’re considering the Sony PlayStation card for its introductory purchase APR, it’s still worth noting the 0-percent introductory period lasts only six months. Granted, many retail credit cards don’t offer an introductory interest rate at all, but the timeframe on this card is far shorter than most general rewards cards.

Some perks

The Sony PlayStation card sports some decent perks, especially for fans of gaming and TV. Cardholders earn 10 percent back as a statement credit on PlayStation Vue, PlayStation Music and PlayStation Now services, as well as better pricing on Deals & Steals, presale tickets to select music and sporting events and access to exclusive rewards items. Other benefits, such as travel accident insurance, auto rental insurance and travel and emergency assistance are sure to appeal to frequent travelers who happen to carry this card in their wallets.

Why get the Sony PlayStation card?

  • You regularly purchase PlayStation and Sony products.
  • You want to earn points on your mobile phone bill.
  • You prefer to use rewards on products or experiences versus travel.
  • You don’t plan to use the card for everyday spending.

How to use the Sony PlayStation card:

  • Make a purchase within 90 days of account opening to score the intro bonus.
  • Pay your mobile phone bills with the card to receive 3:1 points.
  • Submit bonus points forms for all offline PlayStation purchases (from authorized retailers only) to receive full 5:1 rewards.
  • If you use the low introductory APR, try to pay off as much as possible in six months to maximize your savings.
