Chase’s refer-a-friend program is already a great way to earn a few extra Southwest Rapid Rewards points, but a recent Chase announcement means it’s now even easier to rack up rewards. Beginning June 2019, Southwest cardholders can now refer their friends to any personal or business Southwest card to earn bonus points.
Previously, cardholders could only earn a referral bonus if their referral signed up for the same Southwest card they had. Now that the referral process is open to the whole family of Southwest cards, you can ensure your friend chooses the card that is best for them while still earning extra points along the way.
Southwest credit cards: At a glance
All Southwest cards – with the exception of the Performance Business card – earn 2 points per dollar on Southwest and Rapid Rewards hotel and car rental purchases and 1 point per dollar on everything else. The Performance Business card earns 3 points per dollar on Southwest purchases, 2 points per dollar on social media and search engine advertising, internet and cable and phone services and 1 point per dollar on all other purchases.
The personal cards are all currently offering an introductory bonus of 40,000 points for cardholders who spend $1,000 in the first three months, and the Premier business card is offering 60,000 points for cardholders who spend $3,000 in the first three months. The new Performance Business card currently boasts the highest sign-up bonus available on a Southwest card – 70,000 points for cardholders who spend $5,000 in the first three months.
The main differentiators between personal Southwest cards are their annual fees and anniversary bonus points. Depending on how often you fly Southwest, the additional bonus points each year on the more expensive card offerings might make up for the annual fee.
How to refer a friendIf you are a current cardholder of any of the Southwest credit cards, you can take advantage of Chase’s refer-a-friend program to earn even more Rapid Reward points. Just send your friends an application link by filling out the information on the Chase referral page.
After your referral signs up for any of the Southwest cards, you’ll receive your bonus points within eight weeks.
How much can you earn?
For every referral that signs up for any Southwest credit card, you can earn 10,000 bonus points. You can also refer multiple friends for year, for a maximum of 50,000 points from referral bonuses each calendar year.
If you know someone who is interested in a Southwest card, this can be an incredible lucrative way to earn points. If you meet the maximum of 50,000 points from referrals in a year, that brings you almost halfway to the coveted Southwest Companion Pass – which allows you to designate a friend to fly for just the taxes and fees on any Southwest flight you purchase with cash or points.
Southwest credit cards are a great way to stockpile extra Rapid Reward points for your next trip, and they offer several great ways to earn bonus points. By referring your friends for any Southwest card – including the business card – you can fast-track your way to your next rewards flight or the Companion Pass.
