How to get preapproved for a Citi card

Use prequalified offers to find cards matched to your credit profile

If you are worried about your credit card approval odds, prequalified offers are a great tool for finding the cards in your reach. Though Citi doesn’t offer quite as many of these promotions as other card issuers, you still have a chance to snag a top match.

The content on this page is accurate as of the posting date; however, some of our partner offers may have expired. Please review our list of best credit cards, or use our CardMatch™ tool to find cards matched to your needs.

Citi is a advertising partner.

Citi is well known for issuing cards for every kind of cardholder, offering products with competitive intro APRs all the way to those with flexible rewards points. Whatever card you’re looking for, it is important to ensure not only that it aligns with your spending habits, but also that it is designed for users in your credit range.

Applying for a new credit card triggers a hard pull to your credit, which can temporarily lower your credit score a few points. This fact makes it incredibly frustrating to suffer a ding to your score, only not to be approved for the card.

Fortunately, Citi – like many other major card issuers – targets specific consumers with card offers that match up with their credit profiles, without a hard pull to your credit. Read on to learn more about how to unlock these deals.

Prequalify on the Citi website

Unlike many issuers who advertise prequalified offers on tools like CardMatch™, Citi primarily focuses these efforts on its own channels. Citi has a page on its site dedicated to prequalified offers, but it is currently not matching customers. You can check back regularly for when offers are being extended again.

Other ways to prequalify for Citi cards

Filling out the online form is definitely the easiest way to get prequalified for a Citi card – but it is not the only one. While the tool is temporarily unavailable, there are still ways to be targeted for a prequalified offer from Citi. For instance, you can also receive a prequalified Citi offer by snail mail. Before you throw away those letters from Citi, check to see if it includes a prescreened offer.

If you live near a Citi branch, you can also go in and ask if you have any offers in person. In some cases, Citi has been known to offer increased sign-up bonuses or other introductory offers when you apply this way.

Boost your chances

If you aren’t prequalified for the Citi card you want – or any card at all – don’t fret. You can take actionable steps to boost your credit score and better your chance of being targeted in the future.

To do so, follow good credit habits. Always pay your bills on time and keep your credit utilization low. This is especially true if you have any other accounts with Citi, as you can easily show that you are a reliable customer.

Prequalifying does not guarantee approval

It is important to note here that prequalifying for a credit card offer does not ensure you will be approved. While these matches give you a much better idea of your approval odds – they aren’t a guarantee. It is always possible that you prequalify for a card, but still have a denied application.

However, prequalified offers are still the best way to boost your chances of scoring the top credit cards.

Final thoughts

If you are worried about your credit card approval odds, prequalified offers are a great tool for finding the cards in your reach. Though Citi doesn’t offer quite as many of these promotions as other card issuers, you still have a chance to snag a top match.
