In a Nutshell:

Fans of value-priced yet stylish clothes have the most to gain from the Old Navy Visa card, but the card’s paltry rewards on purchases outside of Gap Inc. stores leave much to be desired.

Families on a budget and individuals looking for fashionable clothing at affordable prices are sure to love the Old Navy Visa card, which offers great rewards for frequent shoppers of Gap Inc. stores (Old Navy, Gap, Banana Republic and Athleta).

A decent sign-up bonus, exclusive discounts and no annual fee round out the card’s best features. Unfortunately, a steep APR, limited redemption and the extra bit of effort required to reap the greatest savings from the card means anyone who isn’t an Old Navy devotee — or those who tend to carry a balance from month to month — should probably steer clear.

Solid rewards for regular customers

The Old Navy Visa card’s rewards program is a common one within the retail credit card category. Despite generous 5:1 rewards for in-store and online purchases at Old Navy, Gap, Banana Republic and Athleta, cardholders earn just 1 percent everywhere else — so if you’re looking for better rewards on everyday purchases, opt for a general rewards credit card instead, such as the Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express or the Citi Double Cash® Card.

Modest sign-up bonus

When approved for the Old Navy Visa card online, a 20 percent discount will be applied to your first oldnavy.com purchase paid for with your new card. This sign-up offer expires 90 days after account opening and cannot be combined with other offers or discounts. You can also earn an easy $10 in rewards certificates by registering your email address and enrolling in paperless billing, both of which are worth 500 points.

Easy — but limited — redemption

The card’s redemption program is pretty straightforward. Rewards certificates are automatically issued in $5 increments for every 500 points, and there’s no limit to the number of points you can earn. That said, redemption is limited to $250 per billing cycle, and you can’t use more than three rewards certificates for a single item in-store or five rewards certificates for a single item online. Plus, rewards certificates generally expire one month after issue — an extremely short shelf life that requires you to keep a close eye on your rewards so they don’t go to waste.

On the plus side, the card is flexible in allowing you to stack your rewards certificates with other discounts and offers, and Old Navy certainly isn’t stingy when it comes to regular sales, especially as the holidays approach.

Elite status

Cardholders who earn 5,000 points in a calendar year are upgraded to Navyist status, which comes with 20 percent quarterly bonus reward points, free 3 to 5 business day shipping with no minimum purchase, free basic alterations on Banana Republic purchases and a private toll-free priority line.

Steep APR

Like many other retail credit cards, the Old Navy Visa card comes with a rather high APR of 26.49 percent. Even if your credit score is above average, your interest rate won’t get any lower than that. Whatever you do, don’t charge more than what you can afford to pay in full every month.

Why get the Old Navy Visa card?

  • You’re already a frequent shopper at Old Navy, Gap, Banana Republic and/or Athleta.
  • You prefer merchandise discounts over other types of rewards.
  • You don’t plan to use this as your primary (or even secondary) credit card.
  • You rarely carry a balance from month to month.

How to use the Old Navy Visa card:

  • Make a purchase at Old Navy within the first 90 days to take advantage of 20 percent off.
  • Register your email address and enroll in paperless billing to collect an easy 1,000 points.
  • Avoid using the Old Navy Visa card outside of Gap Inc. stores — you can earn greater rewards on everyday purchases with a general rewards credit card.
  • Use the card at least once every 24 months to keep your points from expiring.
  • Pay your balance in full every month to avoid paying higher-than-average interest.
