This card is meant for people who love food. As one of the most popular food delivery services on the market, DoorDash partnered with Chase to make ordering your next meal more rewarding with the DoorDash Rewards Mastercard. This card is great for DashPass members or people who have always wanted to try the service but were intimidated by the service fees.

Cardmembers earn 4% back on DoorDash and Caviar purchases, whether through the app or online. You also get special discounts and promotions exclusively on DoorDash. On the days you don’t feel like ordering, you can earn 3% cash back at restaurants and 2% cash back at grocery stores.

Pros

  • Earn high rewards food-related categories from DoorDash to grocery stores
  • Enjoy the lack of fees, including no annual fees and no foreign transaction fees
  • Get travel and purchase protections like trip cancellation/interruption protection and purchase protection

Cons

  • Card’s redemption options are limited to DoorDash purchases, statement credit and gift cards
  • There are limited rewards opportunities outside of food-related purchases
  • There are no introductory APR offers with this card and the ongoing APR is pretty high

Why you might want the DoorDash Rewards Mastercard

For DoorDash fans, this could be an incredibly rewarding card that will also get you discounts you can’t find elsewhere. Here’s some features to look out for.

DashPass Perks

The DoorDash perks for this card, as expected, are numerous. Not only do you receive 4% cash back on DoorDash orders, but you also receive a free year of DashPass membership. You can also extend this membership every anniversary year after spending $10,000. With your DashPass membership, you’ll receive free delivery, lower fees, 5% cash back for pickups and exclusive member offers.

On top of that, cardmembers will get 10% off grocery, DashMart, convenience or alcohol orders every month (up to $15 per order). Offer expires 12/31/24. You can also receive $25 off your first two DoorDash shipping orders of $100 or more. You also get an extra $5 monthly credit from the World Elite Mastercard benefits. Take three rides in one calendar month and pay with your World Elite Mastercard to earn a $5 Lyft credit.

High earning potential for food-related categories

If you’re not in the mood to order from DoorDash, you can still earn great rewards on other food options. All Caviar orders earn 4% cash back as well as 3% cash back at restaurants. You also earn 2% percent cash back at grocery stores for both online and in-store purchases. So, whether you want to order takeout, dine out or try out a new recipe, the DoorDash Rewards card will still reward you.

Complimentary year of DashPass

Cardmembers have the opportunity to enjoy a complimentary year of DashPass, which has a value of $96. Although it might not be the most substantial compared to other no annual fee cards, it remains an easily attainable sign-up reward.

Why you might not want the DoorDash Rewards Mastercard

While this card can look very rewarding on the surface, it may not be the right card for everyone. Here’s why.

Lack of versatility

It may be difficult to maximize rewards with the DoorDash Rewards Mastercard if you don’t spend a lot on food. If you make a purchase outside of any food- or grocery-related category, it only earns 1% cash back. Plus, you only have three redemption options for this card. You can redeem rewards to pay for DoorDash orders, get a statement credit or redeem as a gift card.

There are a few perks from Mastercard that make the card’s potential stretch, like the complimentary concierge service and the monthly $5 Lyft credit when you take three or more rides. However, even with these additions, the card is still pretty limited.

High APR

The APR for this card starts close to the current average credit card interest rate and only goes up. Since there are no introductory APR offers, the interest will immediately apply to any balance left on the card and can stack up quickly. If you tend to keep a balance on your card, you may want to skip this one and go for a low-interest credit card.

How the DoorDash Rewards Mastercard compares

The DoorDash Rewards Mastercard is a great choice for fans of the on-demand delivery app, but it doesn’t leave much versatility in the long run. For that, it may be better to look for a general, cash back card.

DoorDash Rewards Mastercard vs Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express

While the DoorDash Rewards Mastercard is great for foodies, home cooks may be less impressed with it. With the Blue Cash Preferred Card from American Express, you earn 6% cash back on up to $6,000 spent at U.S. supermarket purchases per year (then 1 percent). This rate already makes it one of the best grocery credit cards on the market, but it also comes with 6% cash back on select U.S. streaming subscriptions and 3% cash back on gas stations and transit, including rideshares like Lyft.

A drawback might be the $95 annual fee that kicks in after the first year. However, the card makes up for it with perks like the complimentary ShopRunner membership and streaming deals. It’s also good to consider that it comes with intro APR offers that are missing on the DoorDash Rewards Mastercard and a higher welcome bonus of $250 in statement credits when you spend $3,000 within the first six months. This card can definitely be worth it if you prefer creating your own meals and want rewards for various purchases outside of food.

DoorDash Rewards Mastercard vs. Chase Freedom Flex℠

For people who want to keep their DoorDash perk but have a more well-rounded card may find a happy solution with the Chase Freedom Flex card. Along with 3% cash back on dining at restaurants, including takeout and delivery services, the Chase Freedom Flex comes with a three-month complimentary DashPass. Should you want to keep your membership afterwards, it’ll enroll you into a 50% discount for an additional nine months. It also comes with a $200 welcome bonus when you spend $500 within the first three months.

An advantage of this card is that you would maintain the World Elite Mastercard benefits as well as the lack of an annual fee without being limited to food categories when earning cash back. Instead, it earns 5% cash back on rotating bonus category purchases each quarter (up to $1,500 in purchases, then 1 percent; activation required). It also comes with cellphone protection, an uncommon perk in this tier of cards. For those people who want a card that fits their lifestyle instead of a specific category may want to consider the Chase Freedom Flex.

DoorDash Rewards Mastercard vs. Citi Custom Cash®

The Citi Custom Cash card rewards you with 5% cash back on your top eligible spend category each billing cycle, up to $500 in spending, then 1%. What makes the Custom Cash comparable to the DoorDash Rewards card is that two of its eligible categories include categories the DoorDash Rewards card covers — restaurants and grocery stores. If you use delivery apps occasionally but spend plenty in other food-related categories, then the Citi Custom Cash could be a better fit. However, the Custom Cash can also be a great partner card with the DoorDash Rewards card. You can use the DoorDash Rewards Mastercard to earn rewards on all your food delivery and the Citi Custom Cash for your grocery or restaurant spending to maximize your cash back potential.

How to use DoorDash Rewards Mastercard

  • Use it for all DoorDash and Caviar orders for the first 12 months
  • Pay restaurant tabs for cash back
  • Use overseas without worrying about foreign transaction fees
  • Order groceries through DoorDash to save with DashPass discounts and credits

Is the DoorDash Rewards Mastercard right for you?

The DoorDash Rewards Mastercard is a great option for seasoned DashPass holders and new DoorDash fans who want a free year of membership. Even if you only use the membership occasionally and prefer to dine out, it still has high rewards rates that cardholders can take advantage of. However, it doesn’t have a very broad scope of rewards or perks. Frequent travelers or home cooks may feel the limitations of this card sooner than others so it’s important to evaluate if this card has long-term use for you.
