If you plan to carry a balance but still want some rewards, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a more affordable rewards card than the BB&T Visa Signature Business card. This regional bank rewards card isn’t the most lucrative business card on the market, but it does offer one of the lowest available interest rates. That makes it a solid choice if you can’t pay your balance in full.

The BB&T card also offers a number of business-friendly benefits, including liability waiver insurance, flexible payment options, travel insurance and round-the-clock concierge service.

You have to live near a BB&T bank, though, if you want to apply. Only cardholders who live in Texas, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee, West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, Washington, D.C., Ohio, Indiana, Pennsylvania or New Jersey are eligible for the card.

Affordable APR

The most attractive feature offered by the BB&T Visa Signature Business card is its ultra-affordable interest rate, which is one of the lowest rates you can get on a business card. BB&T charges cardholders with the best credit scores just 13.15 percent to carry a balance, while cardholders with lower scores are charged a maximum APR of just 15.15 percent. The card also offers an extensive credit line for businesses that need the flexibility to charge a larger amount. Depending on your creditworthiness, you can be approved for up to $99,000 in credit.

Minimal rewards

Like most low rate credit cards, the BB&T doesn’t offer a stellar rewards program. So if you are hoping to earn back a significant amount, you may want to look at a different card. Cardholders earn just one point for every dollar spent, which is about average for a small bank card, but significantly less generous than many competitors. BB&T helps make up for the anemic rewards rate by offering a point-heavy sign-up bonus. Cardholders who make a purchase within 90 days of receiving the card automatically earn 6,500 bonus points.

However, because BB&T points are valued at just a penny each, the bonus is only worth about $65. Many competitors, by contrast, offer bonuses that are worth at least $100 or more.

Some restrictions on redemption

On the plus side, BB&T doesn’t limit the total number of points you can earn. So if you or your employees are heavy spenders, you can accumulate a hefty number of points – especially since the points that are earned across multiple cards roll into one account. You can use points toward gift cards, merchandise or travel, and you can also use partial points to pay for an airline ticket. However, you have to wait until you earn at least $150 in rewards value before you can redeem points for travel. You also want to redeem points relatively quickly, since BB&T points eventually expire.

Good perks

Despite the card’s less-than-stellar rewards program, the BB&T Visa Signature Business card does offer a number of business-friendly benefits that are often hard to find on comparably priced cards. Like many of its more expensive competitors, the BB&T Visa Signature Business card offers a range of premium travel benefits, including car rental and travel accident insurance, lost luggage assistance, concierge service and more.

In addition, it offers Visa liability waiver insurance, which helps minimize the risk of distributing employee cards. Depending on the size of your business, you can be eligible for coverage of up to $100,000 if an employee misuses a company card.

Why get the BB&T Visa Signature Business card?

  • You plan to carry a balance and need an inexpensive card with a comparatively low rate.
  • You need the flexibility of a bigger credit limit.
  • You still want to earn some rewards.
  • You’re already a BB&T Bank customer and want a card with the same bank.

How to use the BB&T Visa Signature Business card:

  • Use the card for any purchases you can’t afford to repay in full. However, watch your balance closely and try to avoid spending up to your maximum credit limit.
  • Use the card for domestic travel purchases so that you can take advantage of the card’s travel benefits.
  • Compare prices before booking an airline ticket through BB&T. Being able to pay with partial points helps you shave down a ticket’s price, but you may be better off saving points for a better deal and purchasing a ticket for a lower price through another site.
