What purchases qualify for a bonus?

Whenever you pay for an item using your card, the merchant assigns a merchant category code (MCC) to the purchase. Capital One uses these codes to determine how much cash back you earn; however, they have no control over which codes the merchant uses.

See what purchases qualify for bonus categories below.

Vivid Seats category

You can earn the 8 percent bonus on all Vivid Seats ticket purchases, including taxes and fees, through May 2020. Third-party items added to your ticket purchases, such as insurance, are excluded from earning the bonus.

Dining category

Purchases made at restaurants, cafes, bars, lounges, fast-food chains and bakeries qualify for the 4 percent cash back bonus.

Entertainment category

Tickets purchased to a movie, play, concert, sporting event, tourist attraction, theme park, aquarium, zoo, dance club, pool hall or bowling alley are eligible for the 4 percent bonus. Purchases made at record store and video rental locations also qualify.

Non-industry entertainment merchant codes, such as cable, digital streaming and membership services are not eligible.

Grocery store category

The grocery store category includes purchases made at supermarkets, meat lockers, freezers, dairy product stores and specialty markets.

Superstores, including Walmart and Target, are excluded from earning the 2 percent bonus.

Note that food trucks, food carts and some merchants that sell food and drinks within a larger establishment may not categorize themselves as dining merchants. Also, purchases made through third-party payment accounts, mobile card readers, digital wallets or similar technology may not receive the bonus rate, depending on how the technology processes the purchase.

A good fit?

If the bulk of your credit card spending goes toward entertainment, dining and groceries, the Savor card is a great fit. Plus, with the Vivid Seats promotion, now is an ideal time to sign up for the card – especially if you see an MLB game, music festival or Broadway musical in your future.

Just be sure to purchase your tickets before the offer expires: Purchases that post to your account after 11:59 pm EST on May 31, 2020, are not eligible for the 8 percent bonus.
