How to get a Rose Gold Amex card

Having a card with a snazzy look sounds good, but should you apply? It depends on your spending habits and rewards goals

Summary

The rose gold design on the American Express Gold Card turned heads as a limited-time offer in years past, but the flashy design was recently relaunched as a permanent option. Here’s how to get your hands on one.

The content on this page is accurate as of the posting date; however, some of our partner offers may have expired. Please review our list of best credit cards, or use our CardMatch™ tool to find cards matched to your needs.

While many consumers care more about the perks and benefits their rewards credit card offers, it’s hard to beat a card with a sleek, trendy design.

In fact, American Express Trendex research shows nearly 60% of consumers would opt to pick their own credit card design if given a choice, and 39% say the look and feel of their credit card are important to them.

Fortunately, Amex customers don’t have to decide between look and substance any longer. On Feb. 4, 2021, American Express began offering the metal rose gold card design for the American Express® Gold Card. This change is permanent, meaning you can rest assured the rose gold card option will be there when you’re ready.

According to the card issuer, a previous limited run of the rose gold card made its mark to the point where it could not be ignored.

“Our rose gold design quickly became a cardmember favorite when we introduced the limited-edition design a few years ago, so we knew we needed to bring it back as an option to choose from permanently,” Rachel Stocks, executive vice president, global premium products and benefits, at American Express, said in a press release.

Should you sign up for it? That really depends on your spending habits, the Amex cardholder benefits you want the most, and the types of rewards you hope to earn.

What is the Amex Rose Gold card?

The Amex Rose Gold Card is the same as the Amex Gold Card, except for the former’s distinctive tint. Both color options feature the same rewards scheme and cardholder benefits, and both earn points in the lucrative and popular American Express Membership Rewards program.

Keep in mind that Amex Membership Rewards are one of the most flexible rewards currencies you can earn. You can use Amex Membership Rewards to book travel through AmexTravel.com or for point transfers to Amex airline and hotel partners. Meanwhile, you can also redeem Amex Membership Rewards points for statement credits, purchases made directly with retailers, gift cards and more.

Notable features of the Amex Gold Card

Before you apply for the Amex Gold Card, consider its many key features:

  • Earn 60,000 Membership Rewards points when you spend $4,000 within six months of account opening.
  • Earn 4X points on restaurants (plus takeout and delivery in the U.S.) and on up to $25,000 spent at U.S. supermarkets per calendar year (then 1X), 3X points on flights booked with airlines or through AmexTravel.com and 1X points on other purchases (terms apply).

What’s the difference between the Rose Gold Amex and Amex Gold card?

There are no substantive differences between the Rose Gold Amex and the Amex Gold Card. Both cards are the same in terms of their rewards and benefits, and both cards feature a heavy metal composition.

When you apply, you can opt for the gold or rose gold version of the card.

How to apply for the Amex Rose Gold card

When you decide to apply for the American Express Gold Card, you have the option of picking your card color directly on the application page. Choose “Gold” or “Rose Gold” on the application page, then hit “apply now.”

Once you fill out the full application and are approved for your new card, you’ll receive the color option of your choice.

Can I swap the Amex Gold card for the Rose Gold Amex?

If you haven’t applied for the Amex Gold Card, you can request a rose gold version from the start. However, if you’re already a cardholder with a traditional gold version of the card, you do have some options.

Since American Express has made the rose gold version permanent, all you have to do to change your card color is request a different version over the phone or via American Express online chat. Just tell the customer service representative that you want a rose gold version of the Amex Gold Card you already have, and Amex will send you an updated version of your card in the mail.

Bottom line

The Amex Gold Card was already a winner, but the fact you can get it in rose gold makes it a stylish choice, as well. However, it can still make sense to compare this card to other American Express credit cards that earn cash back or Amex Membership Rewards points. As you probably know, Amex offers a range of cards tailored to consumers with different spending styles and rewards habits. Whether or not the Rose Gold Amex is the best card for your needs, American Express will almost certainly offer a rewards card that can help you reach your goals.
