In a Nutshell:

The Victoria’s Secret Angel credit card is must-have plastic for die-hard fans of the lingerie retailer, but those who rarely patronize the pink-hued stores should steer clear.

If you never miss Victoria’s Secret’s Semi-Annual Sale or panty parties, you’ll love the store-branded card that rewards frequent shoppers for purchases they already make. Despite the Victoria’s Secret Angel credit card’s barely-there sign-up bonus and minimal rewards, there’s still an opportunity to save when you stack rewards certificates on top of other offers and discounts.

Like most retail cards, a sky-high APR puts you at risk of having interest charges eat into your rewards and discounts, so try not to spend more than you can afford to pay off every month — no matter how wide-eyed you become over everything pink.

Just call me Angel

Or Angel VIP or Angel Forever, depending on how much you spend within a rolling 12-month period. All Victoria’s Secret cardholders start out on the base Angel tier, but the more you spend, the quicker you’ll be upgraded to higher tiers (and benefits). You automatically advance to the second rewards tier (Angel VIP) when you accumulate 500 points, and to the third (Angel Forever) when you compile 1,000.

However, the card’s meager rewards mean it might take you awhile to get there. With 1 point for every $1 spent (and triple points on all bra purchases), Angel and Angel VIP members earn $10 rewards certificates once they accrue 250 points, while Angel Forever members snag $15 for the same number of points. Such a paltry points system means the Victoria’s Secret Angel credit card is best reserved for the most loyal fans of the retailer’s lingerie, womenswear and other products.

Also, keep in mind that while the Victoria’s Secret Angel credit card can be used at Bath & Body Works, those purchases do not earn points, nor can Angel Rewards be redeemed there.

Short redemption window

Bad news about those rewards certificates: They have a short shelf life of 90 days, so you’ll need to shop at Victoria’s Secret at least once every three months to avoid losing out on your rewards.

In addition, points expire one year from the date they’re earned or if you fail to make a purchase for 12 consecutive months. The lesson here? Pay attention to your billing statements or call (800) 695-9478 to keep an eye on your points and make sure they don’t go waste.

Lackluster sign-up bonus

The Victoria’s Secret Angel credit card’s sign-up bonus is one of the more uninspiring offers we’ve seen in the retail category. With just $15 off a future purchase, the bonus ranks well below what you’ll get with the Sears Shop Your Way MasterCard or the Macy’s American Express card, both of which offer similar merchandise for lower prices (but admittedly without the brand recognition from the largest U.S. retailer of women’s lingerie).

Decent perks

The Victoria’s Secret Angel credit card’s fringe benefits help elevate its overall appeal, despite the card’s mostly ho-hum features. All cardholders receive free birthday gifts and free standard shipping on purchases that include bras. You’ll also score triple-point days of your choosing, though how many days depends on your tier status: Angel = 1 day, Angel VIP = 2 days and Angel Forever = 3 days. Triple-point days can be chosen retroactively by calling 1-844-392-6435 within 90 days of a purchase.

Angel VIPs and Forevers get insider access (including early notice of the Victoria’s Secret Semi-Annual Sale) and invitations to exclusive events, while Angel Forever members are rewarded with annual thank-you gifts.

Why get the Victoria’s Secret Angel card?

  • You frequently shop at Victoria’s Secret and want to earn rewards on purchases you already make.
  • You prefer merchandise discounts over other types of rewards.
  • You don’t plan to carry a balance from month to month.

How to use the Victoria’s Secret Angel card

  • Keep an eye on your rewards certificates’ expiration dates.
  • Combine your rewards certificates with special promotions and other discounts for additional savings.
  • Pay your monthly balance in full to avoid incurring higher-than-average interest.
