Uber Visa Card Review: More Details

The Uber Visa Card may be rewarding for loyalists of the ride-share service, but its appeal is limited because of its inflexible redemption scheme, which only allows you to apply rewards to future Uber purchases.

That said, if you use Uber frequently and will make use of the Uber Cash you earn, the card may be a good choice since it also offers a decent rewards rate on dining and all sorts of travel purchases without a foreign transaction fee.

Earning rate

The Uber Visa card is most rewarding for those who spend a significant amount on Uber purchases. You’ll earn 5 percent back in Uber Cash on all Uber rides, JUMP bike and scooter rentals and UberEATS orders. This is a terrific rate and easily beats the rate offered by cards like the Chase Sapphire Reserve® (3 points per dollar on ride-shares) and the American Express® Green Card* (3 points per dollar on ride-shares and other transit). All information about the American Express® Green Card has been collected independently by CreditCards.com and has not been reviewed by the issuer.

The card also earns 3 percent back in Uber Cash on restaurant, airfare, hotel and vacation home rentals, which is comparable to that of many no-annual-fee dining and travel credit cards – including the Capital One SavorOne Cash Rewards Credit Card and Wells Fargo Propel American Express® card*.

Keep in mind, however, that Uber Cash is not true cash back and can only be used for Uber purchases. Other rewards cards offer much more flexibility in how you redeem your points.

Sign-up bonus

Though not the highest bonus you can find on a rewards card, the Uber Visa comes with a modest sign-up offer of $100 in Uber Cash for cardholders who spend $500 in the first 90 days. Luckily, the bonus is easy to earn, only requiring about $167 per month in spend.

Redeeming rewards

You can only claim your cash back as Uber Cash. You cannot choose any other redemption method like gift cards, a statement credit or deposit into your checking or savings account. Uber Cash can only be used toward future Uber purchases such as Uber rides or UberEATS purchases.

Tip: Keep in mind that while you can use points earned on the Uber Visa Card for Uber credits, the points do not count toward your status in the Uber Rewards program. To advance through the program’s tiers, you’ll need to earn points by taking qualifying rides or making UberEATS orders.

Cellphone insurance

The Uber Visa comes with a benefit that can be very valuable – cellphone insurance. As long as you pay your monthly phone bill with the card, you can be reimbursed up to $600 if your phone is damaged or stolen.

Other benefits

Beyond cellphone insurance and the credit for streaming services, the Uber Visa is lacking in additional card benefits. Depending on your creditworthiness, you might qualify for a few additional perks, but you’ll have to read the card’s benefits guide after approval to see what you are eligible for.

However, there are a few perks that all Uber Visa cardholders can enjoy, including no foreign transaction fee. This is a nice benefit for frequent travelers, as you can avoid the 2-3 percent fee on foreign purchases charged by many other cards.

Visa Local Offers

If you are eager to earn even more Uber Cash, Uber also boasts a card-linked offer program called Visa Local Offers. This program allows you to earn cash back (in the form of Uber Cash) from restaurants and retailers just by making a purchase with a linked card. You can link as many Visa credit cards to your account as you like, and cash back is awarded automatically.

The cash you’ll earn with a Visa Local Offer can be redeemed either for an Uber ride or UberEATS purchase.

Alternative credit cards for Uber riders

While the Uber Visa offers the best rewards rate on the market on Uber rides, other travel cards – like the Chase Sapphire Reserve® – offer much more flexible rewards redemption and generous rates on all kinds of travel purchases – including Uber rides. With the Reserve card, you’ll earn 3 points per dollar on your ride-share purchases. If you’re wiling to switch to Lyft, the Reserve will be an even better deal, as it offers 10 points per dollar on Lyft purchases (through March 2025) plus a free membership to Lyft Pink for one year (activate by 3/31/25).

Approval odds

The Uber Visa is very easy to apply for. In fact, you can do so right from your Uber app. However, you’ll want to ensure you meet certain qualifications before applying. We recommend the card for users with good to excellent credit (above 670).

Customer service

The Uber Visa is issued by Barclays, which has a mixed customer service reputation. In J.D. Power’s 2020 customer satisfaction survey, Barclays took a big dive compared to the previous year, scoring 766 and ranking ninth out of 11 major credit card issuers.

On the flip side, the Barclays app receives positive reviews, with an average rating of 4.1 out of 5 in both the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store.

How does the Uber Visa compare to other rewards cards?

Wells Fargo Propel American Express® card

The Wells Fargo Propel card offers a generous bonus on popular categories like dining, gas station purchases, transit and travel (including ride-share purchases) with no annual fee. Its redemption options are flexible and easy to understand, and its sign-up bonus is generous, making it one of the best no-annual-fee travel cards available.

The Wells Fargo Propel American Express card is no longer available.
