In a Nutshell:

Frequent Maurices shoppers could save a considerable amount of money with the mymaurices VIP credit card, but its exceptionally high APR means those who don’t usually pay their balances in full every month should stay far, far away.

With a lackluster sign-up bonus (10 percent off your first purchase) and sky-high APR, the mymaurices VIP credit card doesn’t look all that enticing at first glance. That said, there are ample opportunities for regular customers to save big at the women’s clothing retailer, especially in the first six months.

During that time, new cardholders get an additional 10 percent off in-store purchases made with the mymaurices VIP card. Combined with mymaurices loyalty rewards, the card may be worth it if you shop smart.

Everyday savings

Unlike other retail credit cards, there’s no waiting for rewards with the mymaurices VIP card. Instead, you’ll receive an automatic discount of 10 percent whenever you use the card to shop in stores and online. (You’ll score free shipping on every online order, too.) The discount can be stacked with sales prices and promo codes, giving you opportunities to save even more on your favorite fashion finds — especially when you consider there’s no limit on the discount itself.

Even better? For three months, new cardholders collect 10 percent off in-store purchases on top of the everyday 10 percent savings, giving you a total of 20 percent off. (The added discount does not apply to online orders.) Cardholders also earn 100 bonus points when they open a Maurice card.

Pair with mymauricesloyalty program

While you don’t have to have the credit card to enjoy the advantages of the mymaurices loyalty program, there are additional benefits for having both, such as extra birthday perks and double points weekends. The loyalty program itself lets you earn one point per dollar spent. For every 100 points, you’ll receive a $5 rewards certificate added to your account one time each month. VIP status also gives you access to special sneak peek events and product previews.

However, keep in mind the bit of maintenance you’ll have to do: mymaurices rewards certificates expire after 90 days, a fairly short shelf life compared to some other retail loyalty programs. You’re also limited to redeeming six rewards certificates per visit, and points earned through the program expire after 12 months of inactivity. In other words, keep an eye on what you earn to make sure your rewards don’t go unused.

Very high APR

According to CreditCards.com’s 2017 annual survey of retail credit cards, the average retail card APR sits at 24.99 percent — making the mymaurices VIP card’s APR of 27.99 percent even more eye-opening. As with most retail credit cards, it’s recommended that you don’t carry a balance on the card, lest you risk eating into those everyday savings and VIP extras.

Closed-loop card

The mymaurices VIP credit card’s status as a closed-loop card makes it far less useful than an open-loop card, which can be used basically everywhere. The mymaurices card is only valid at Maurices, but given the astronomical APR, that’s probably a good thing — the fewer opportunities you have to run up your balance, the better.

Why get the mymaurices card?

  • You’re already a frequent shopper at Maurices.
  • You prefer merchandise discounts over other types of rewards.
  • You don’t plan to carry a balance from month to month.

How to use the mymaurices card:

  • For the first few months, do most (if not all) of your shopping in stores to snag an additional 10 percent off.
  • Plan your purchases around double points weekends to earn double the rewards.
  • Search for Maurices promo cards beforehand to take advantage of extra savings.
  • Redeem mymaurices rewards certificates within 90 days to keep them from expiring.
  • Pay your balance in full every month to avoid paying higher-than-average interest.
