Boingo Wi-Fi is a global network of more than a million hotspots, and qualifying cardmembers might have access for free.
Access to Wi-Fi is something we are used to today, but it is still difficult to find regular, secure options everywhere you travel. Whether you are setting up to work in your local coffee shop or traveling abroad and hoping to avoid pricey data charges, it is important to ensure not only that you have Wi-Fi access, but that the network you connect to is safe.
Enter Boingo Wi-Fi – a global network of more than a million hotspots in coffee shops, airports, hotels, aircraft (including some flights with Lufthansa, Japan and American Airlines) and much more. With just one account, you can connect securely in thousands of locations.
How do Boingo hotspots work?
Boingo is a paid, membership-based service – offering hourly, daily or monthly rates. In addition, many credit cards include membership as an added benefit. No matter how you get your membership, you’ll use your single Boingo log in to access all one million Boingo hotspots around the world.
Boingo hotspots come under many different names, depending on the local parter. Luckily, Boingo offers tools that make it easy to find a qualifying connection.
The Wi-Finder app is the easiest way to quickly filter through Boingo hotspots and find one nearby. You can even set up notifications when you are in range of an eligible location.
Boingo also offers a unique service called Passpoint, which allows users to create one profile that will automatically log them in to participating Wi-Fi hotspots. Rather than having to connect individually to each new hotspot you visit, you can download and install the Passpoint Secure profile onto your device. Once you complete this one-time step, your device will automatically connect to qualifying networks without prompting a login.
Which credit cards include Boingo access?
For some credit card holders, Boingo Wi-Fi access might be included in your card membership. Many American Express cards include this perk, such as The Business Platinum® Card from American Express. Here’s a quick look at Amex cards that offer Boingo membership:
Qualifying American Express cardholders receive unlimited Boingo access, which allows up to four devices to connect to all Boingo hotspots at no cost. There are no roaming fees or time restraints associated with this membership. If you aren’t sure if your card includes the perk, you can check your eligibility on Boingo’s website.
To take advantage of the Boingo benefit on an Amex card, be sure you enroll in your membership. You can do so through the benefits section of your American Express account or on the Boingo site.
Boingo membership options
If you don’t have an eligible credit card, there are still several paid membership options for accessing Boingo hotspots.
|Unlimited||$14.99/month||Unlimited access for up to 4 devices|
|Day pass||$7.95/day||24 hours of access for up to 4 devices|
|Hourly pass||Price varies by location||1, 2 or 3-hour plans for each individual device|
Is Boingo Wi-Fi secure?
With data security a major concern for many, Boingo Wi-Fi always includes a secure sign-up and authentication process. If you use Passpoint, you’ll have an additional layer of security, as you won’t have to enter your log in information at each hotspot.
With such a diverse list of hotspot locations, anyone who regularly needs Wi-Fi access away from home or work can benefit from using Boingo. You’ll have a more secure option wherever you travel. Plus, if you have a qualifying American Express or Mastercard, you can enjoy the perk at no extra cost.
