Bonus on unique, everyday spending categories
While many cards offer rewards bonuses on travel and dining, it is rare to find a card that also offers a bonus on everyday spending categories such as music streaming services, ride-hailing and tolls. Bev Anderson, head of Wells Fargo cards and retail services, explains that the updated Propel card is designed to complement the lifestyles of consumers, “whether they are commuting to work or planning a summer vacation; whether they’re downloading their favorite TV series to binge watch or having dinner out with friends.
What purchases qualify for the bonus rate?
Dining category – Cardholders earn 3 percent cash back when they eat out or order in at restaurants, including fast food, fine dining, bistros and more. Drinking places are also included in this category.
Bakeries, grocery stores and other miscellaneous places that serve food on their premises are excluded from earning the bonus.
Travel and transit category – The travel category includes airline, car rentals, passenger trains, hotels and homestays, travel agencies, campgrounds and cruises. The transit category includes gas stations, ridesharing, parking, taxis and tolls.
Gas purchases made at warehouse clubs, grocery stores and superstores may be excluded from this category.
Popular streaming services category – You will earn the 3 percent bonus when you use your Propel card to pay for the following eligible streaming services: Apple Music, Hulu, Netflix, Pandora, Sirius XM Radio and Spotify Premium.
When can you apply?
If you currently have a Wells Fargo Propel card, you will automatically be upgraded to the new card (sans the 30,000-point bonus). New customers can apply starting July 16, 2018.
