You can earn Ibotta rewards in store and online and can even earn bonus rewards by redeeming offers multiple times. For the right person, Ibotta can be a valuable – and lucrative – shopping tool.

But can you earn enough money with Ibotta to make it worth your time? Let’s take a closer look at how Ibotta works, how many retailers participate and how you can use the app to get the most out of your purchases.

What is Ibotta?

Ibotta helps you earn cash back on online and in-store purchases. With over 1,500 brands and retailers offering coupons or cash back deals, Ibotta makes it easy to get money back on everything from groceries to electronics. All you have to do is download the mobile app or add the browser extension to your computer, make a list of the Ibotta offers you’d like to earn and start shopping.

If you’re shopping online, Ibotta will automatically keep track of the cash back you’ve earned. If you’re shopping in person, simply upload a photo of your receipt and let Ibotta do the rest.

How does Ibotta work?

To sign up with Ibotta, create an account at Ibotta.com or download the Ibotta app. If you want to earn cash back from Ibotta while shopping on your computer, download the Ibotta browser extension for Chrome as well.

Once your Ibotta account is set up – including linking your credit cards and loyalty accounts – you can start browsing Ibotta offers and adding them to your list. Some offers can be redeemed at any retailer, while some offers can only be redeemed at a specific retailer. Fortunately, some offers can be redeemed multiple times – so pay attention to the fine print. Most Ibotta offers must be added to your list before you can redeem them for cash back.

Ibotta offers

When you shop online through the Ibotta app or a Chrome browser that has the Ibotta extension installed, you’ll automatically earn cash back on any eligible purchases. When you shop in person at a retailer, you’ll need to upload a photo of your receipt to your Ibotta account. That way, Ibotta can calculate how much cash back you’ve earned.

No matter how you shop, always add deals to your Ibotta list first. While select deals can be applied automatically, others have to be claimed.

You can also earn bonus cash for specific actions, like referring friends, redeeming 10 unique offers, redeeming offers multiple times and more.

After you’ve earned $20 with Ibotta, you can withdraw your earnings. Link your PayPal account to get money deposited, or select a digital gift card from retailers like Amazon.com, Starbucks and Uber.

Which stores participate in Ibotta?

Over 300 retailers participate in Ibotta, including grocery stores, pet stores, movie theaters, restaurants and more. Check out Ibotta’s supported retailers list to see if your favorite store participates in Ibotta. Bartell Drugs, Forever 21, Office Depot, Priceline and Wawa are just a sample of what’s currently on the list.

Pros and cons of Ibotta

The best thing about Ibotta is its flexibility. Whether you’re shopping at Sam’s Club or ordering takeout through Grubhub, Ibotta is ready to help you earn cash back. With over 300 participating retailers and numerous cash back offers that apply to “any brand” or “any item” within a certain category, most shoppers will be able to find Ibotta offers that can help them save money on purchases they were already planning to make.

On the flip side, many Ibotta offers cannot be combined with other types of coupons. If you were hoping to save twice on the same purchase, you might be a little disappointed.

Additionally, Ibotta provides you with many different ways of earning cash back, from tapping the “shop” button in the mobile app to scanning QR codes at checkout. While this adds to Ibotta’s flexibility, some users might find the numerous options a little confusing or overwhelming.

Here’s one more tip: Remember to add Ibotta offers to your list before you start shopping. If the offer isn’t on your list when you make the purchase, you can’t earn Ibotta cash back. Don’t make the mistake of shopping first and checking Ibotta second.

Best credit cards to use with Ibotta

If you want to earn credit card rewards while you earn cash back with Ibotta, you’re probably going to want one of the best credit cards for groceries – but you might also want to consider one of the best travel credit cards or best credit cards for online shopping.

Remember, you can earn Ibotta cash back on everything from restaurant meals to plane tickets, not to mention clothing, pet supplies, subscription services and more.

The Bank of America® Cash Rewards credit card* can be a good choice, as it gives you the flexibility to earn rewards on many different kinds of Ibotta purchases.

You’ll earn 3% cash back on a category of your choice, between gas, online shopping, dining, travel, drugstores or home improvement. You’ll also earn 2% cash back on grocery stores and wholesale clubs, for up to $2,500 per quarter on combined 2% and 3% category purchases.

The Bank of America Cash Rewards card lets you change your 3% category every calendar month, which means you can earn travel rewards one month, drugstore rewards the next month and so on – while also taking advantage of all the cash back possibilities Ibotta has to offer.

Should you sign up for Ibotta?

If you shop regularly at any of the more than 300 retailers on Ibotta’s list – and most major retailers are on there – you might enjoy earning a little extra cash back with Ibotta. The program is flexible enough that it can accommodate nearly every shopper, from fashionistas to foodies. You’ll have to do the work of identifying which Ibotta cash back offers you’d like to earn, but this kind of coupon clipping is fairly easy to do.

The great thing about Ibotta is that you only need to earn $20 in cash back before you can withdraw your cash to PayPal or exchange it for a digital gift card. If you try Ibotta, earn your first $20 and decide you don’t like it, you can always switch to another savings program like Rakuten or Checkout 51.
