The Cargo Box has recently expanded offerings from in-ride snacks to an e-commerce platform – but is it worth it?
With the expanded offering, you can buy snacks and chargers in addition to all kinds of products online, from digital movie downloads to gaming systems. Plus, you earn 10 percent of every Cargo purchase back in Uber Cash – to apply to your next ride.
On the downside, the items featured in “daily deals” – Cargo’s newly minted marketplace – are limited for now.
What is Cargo?
Cargo is a company that has partnered closely with Uber to provide a new source of revenue for drivers while offering a better ride to Uber riders. The company started off with the Cargo Box – which is a vending-machine style box of items riders might want while they take an Uber, such as snacks or phone chargers. Uber drivers can install one of these Cargo boxes in their car for free. Then, when a rider purchases an item through the Cargo app, the driver earns a commission and the rider earns Uber rewards for their purchase.
More recently, Cargo has expanded its shopping opportunities. Now, riders who scan the QR code on a Cargo Box will unlock much more than just snacks and phone accessories; they will be able to shop in an online marketplace featuring a wide range of products via daily deals.
According to the Cargo website, more than 20,000 Uber drivers are already using a Cargo Box, and that number is growing. Beyond improving their offerings, Cargo is encouraging expansion by offering a referral bonus to any Uber driver or rider who gets another Uber driver to try out Cargo.
How to earn Uber rewards with Cargo
A Cargo Box is a clear win for Uber drivers – they don’t have to spend their own money to stock snacks, and they earn a percentage of all sales. But what’s in it for the rider?
On top of the convenience of food or a charger mid-ride, Cargo incentivizes Uber riders to take advantage of the product with Uber Cash. Whenever you purchase an item from a Cargo Box, you get 10 percent of that cost back in Uber credits.
The same is true for the newly launched Cargo marketplace – and in a much bigger way. Now, rather than earning 10 percent cash back on a granola bar that costs just a few dollars, Uber riders can rack up 10 percent cash back on all kinds of larger purchases. Cargo offers movie downloads, electronics and more in what it calls “daily deals.”
The products featured in the Cargo marketplace are limited for now and can change day to day, but taking advantage of a larger purchase is a great way to maximize your Uber rewards.
Once you’ve racked up rewards in Cargo, you can use your Uber credits to cover future rides or UberEATS purchases.
Other ways to earn Uber Cash
While Cargo offers a unique opportunity to earn some extra dough toward your next Uber ride, it is far from the only way to rack up rewards with the ride-share brand. In fact, Uber recently launched its own rewards program, which offers points on every ride and UberEATS order that members can use to unlock cash bonuses and advance through elite status tiers.
Additionally, you can earn credits to use with Uber from the right credit card. The Uber Visa Card, for one, lets users easily redeem all their rewards for Uber rides or UberEATS orders. Alternatively, The Platinum Card® from American Express offers a $15 statement credit every month (plus an additional $20 in December) to cover Uber rides – up to $200 in credits a year.

With the recent launch of the Uber Rewards program and Cargo’s expansion, there is a growing number of great ways to rack up Uber Cash. If you frequently ride with the service or order food via UberEATS, these rewards can be a very valuable currency.
While Cargo’s product options are limited for now, it is still offering a unique opportunity to bring in large amounts of Uber Cash while you ride. If you find yourself in an Uber with a Cargo Box, be sure to check out the deals and see if you can score some top-notch rewards.
