New SkyMiles Select membership from Delta offers priority boarding, other perks

The program boasts $100 worth of benefits for a $59 annual fee

Summary

SkyMiles Select comes with a few nice perks, but it might not be worth the $59 membership fee.

Delta has just launched a new program for SkyMiles members. SkyMiles Select comes with a $59 annual fee and offers flyers the opportunity to pay for perks like priority boarding ahead of time – for a lower cost.

Here’s what perks you can enjoy with SkyMiles Select:

  • Main Cabin 1 boarding
  • 8 drink vouchers
  • Limited-edition bag tag

Delta estimates the total value of these benefits at around $100, meaning you are saving close to half the cost of these perks.

Is SkyMiles Select worth it?

For now, the benefits that come with SkyMiles select don’t seem all that impressive. But if you are the kind of traveler who prefers to take advantage of these perks anyway, it might save you a little money.

For example, if you always buy an alcoholic beverage on board – whether beer, wine or spirits – you can use SkyMiles Select to pay for the drinks in advance and save a few bucks. Depending on how often you fly, the eight free drink vouchers that come with the program can take you a long way.

As for priority boarding, it’s difficult to attribute a dollar value to this benefit. For many people, the guarantee of a spot for your carry-on right above your seat is well worth the cost.

However, it’s worth noting that you can also get Main Cabin 1 boarding just by carrying a qualifying Delta credit card. Even the moderately priced Delta SkyMiles® Gold Credit Card from American Express offers the perk – in addition to the opportunity to rack up SkyMiles on everyday spending. If you are a frequent Delta flyer, you might be better off investing in the card’s $95 annual fee (waived in the first year) instead of SkyMiles Select.

All in all, the perks that come with SkyMiles Select aren’t as prestigious as they seem.
