On Oct. 13, 2021, American Express launched an exciting new referral bonus offer “+4 Means More,” available not only to consumer cardmembers, but for the first time, also to Amex business cardholders referring other business owners.

Last year, Amex advertised a “3 for All” bonus, offering 3 bonus points per dollar for three months to cardmembers who referred a friend (if the friend was approved).

This year’s bonus offer, available through Dec. 1, 2021, provides even a better opportunity to earn extra rewards.

How the new ‘+4 Means More’ offer works

With the new offer, if an eligible American Express cardmember refers a friend or business owner between now and Dec. 1, 2021, and their friend gets approved for the card, referring cardmembers will earn an additional 4 bonus points per dollar on eligible purchases for three months (on up to $25,000, starting from the date their friend is approved).

The approved friend also gets rewarded. While they won’t get the elevated rewards rate, they’re still eligible for the card’s welcome offer. Plus, they can also use the limited-time referral bonus offer to invite their friends to apply and start earning 4 extra points per dollar as well.

Should you use the new referral bonus offer?

A referral bonus is an excellent opportunity to earn extra points and give your rewards count a nice boost.

An additional 4 points per dollar can be a huge deal for your rewards earnings. For example, if you have the American Express® Green Card, you’re earning 3 points per dollar at restaurants. With the referral bonus offer, you’ll earn 7 points per dollar.

Say, for instance, you spend $200 per month on dining out. With your regular earning rate, you’ll get 600 points in a month, but with the elevated rate from the referral offer, you’ll earn 1,400 points. That’s more than double your regular rewards in this category.

If you know someone who could benefit from an Amex card, chat with them to see if may be interested in applying. American Express is one of the top card issuers on the market, with an excellent credit card lineup, and your friend is likely to easily find a card that suits their spending.
