When it comes to responding to a crisis such as the COVID-19 outbreak, American Express is proving to be one of the most flexible and accommodating issuers in assisting cardmembers.

The issuer was the first to give its card users more time to earn a welcome bonus and recently introduced a set of limited time benefits adjusted for cardholders’ new spending patterns.

And on May 5, 2020, it was confirmed that Amex is adding a $200 travel credit to The Platinum Card® from American Express later this year.

What we know about the $200 travel credit so far

“Over the coming weeks and months select cardmembers will get access to additional offers upon their card renewal to further support them and show our appreciation for their ongoing membership,” American Express said in a statement.

While the full terms of the upcoming $200 travel credit offer aren’t available yet, it’s been reported that select Amex Platinum cardholders will be able to use the offer beginning in Aug. 1, 2020, through Dec. 31, 2021.

According to the reports, the offer will be available to Amex Platinum cardholders who renew their card between April 1, 2020, and Dec. 31, 2020. To earn the travel credit, cardmembers will need to make an eligible purchase through American Express Travel.

Should I renew my Amex Platinum card to get the travel credit?

It’s a viable concern that carrying a luxury travel card with a high annual fee during the pandemic might not be the best investment. However, American Express has demonstrated its willingness to accommodate cardmembers and adjust to their new needs and spending habits.

While you might have to wait to take advantage of Amex Platinum perks and travel rewards, it still might make sense to stick with the card. Even though it’s probably not worth doing it just for the $200 travel credit, there are more incentives that Amex offers to ensure Platinum cardmembers’ needs are met.

For instance, as a part of the limited time benefits, Amex is offering Platinum users up to $320 in statement credits when using the card on select streaming and wireless telephone services – up to $20 per month on each. This offer is valid from May through December 2020.

It’s also likely that more offers will be introduced as Amex is working to navigate the current situation and looking for ways to help consumers. So far, the issuer has been proactive in its efforts.

Additionally, if your card’s annual fee is due soon and you’re not sure if you want to keep your card, it’s always a good idea to call the issuer. It’s possible that American Express will be able to work out a personalized solution to help you make sure that your current membership is worth it for you.
