Maybe you’ve accumulated credit card debt and you’ve realized you could end up paying thousands of dollars in interest fees. Perhaps you have a big purchase planned, but you don’t have the cash on hand to pay for it.

A 0% intro APR card might be an option for you. Here, we look at:

  • What are 0% APR credit cards?
  • What does 0% intro APR mean?
  • How to choose a 0% APR offer
  • What is a go-to APR?
  • What is the average interest rate on a credit card?

We’ll explain what to do – and what not to do – when choosing a 0% APR card. Here’s what you need to know:

What are 0% APR credit cards?

A 0% intro APR card is a product that offers no interest for a set amount of time, typically up to 21 months. These are great cards for paying off a card balance (or two) without incurring more interest charges. They are also good for consolidating debt into a single payment. These cards can sometimes offer 0% APR on purchases for a limited time. When someone refers to a “0% APR” or “zero interest” credit card, they are talking about the same thing.

What does 0% intro APR mean?

A 0% intro APR means that you pay no interest for a set amount of time on balance transfers on credit cards, purchases or both. With balance transfers, you can avoid the debilitating costs of interest fees, which can number in the thousands of dollars over time. For example, if you have a $3,000 balance on a card and you’re paying 17% APR, it would take you 126 months to pay the minimum payment each month. That includes the $3,000 plus $2,241 in interest fees. By using a 0% intro APR card, you can avoid the $2,241 charges. A 0% intro APR card can sometimes be used for purchases, as well, which is handy if you have a big purchase coming up.

How to choose a zero interest offer

  1. Change your habits. Before applying for a 0% APR card, you’ll need to understand how it works. You have a set amount of time when you pay no interest on a balance transfer or purchase. That means you should only put new charges on your card that you can pay for in full at the end of the month once the offer ends. Otherwise, you’ll incur interest. Better yet, don’t put new purchases on the card until the debt is paid. And when the card is paid off, only charge what you already have the money for.
  2. Figure out how much you can pay. Make a budget, being brutally honest about your expenses, and allowing room for fun and emergencies. Now, figure out how much of your income you can put toward your card balance. This will inform you on how much of an introductory offer you need.
  3. Compare introductory offers. Offers can range from 6 months to 21 months, and the cards can have other features that might be worth your while (more on that later). Many 0% APR cards have offers for both purchases and balance transfers, and sometimes they have offers for one of them.
  4. Look at the other benefits. Think about how you plan to use the card after the introductory offer ends. Do you want to take advantage of rewards such as cash back or miles at some point? What kinds of spending will you be doing? Groceries? Restaurants?
  5. Is there an annual fee? If you plan to use your 0% APR card for rewards after you’ve paid off the balance, an annual fee shouldn’t be a deal breaker. That’s because the rewards you earn can more than make up for the fee. But if you only plan to use the card for credit building after the offer ends, then you’ll want to stick to a card without an annual fee.
  6. Is there a balance transfer fee? Sometimes, 0% APR cards offer no balance transfer fee. A balance transfer fee typically runs $5-$10 or 3%-5%, whichever is greater. But through special offers or as a standard feature, this fee might be waived. But look at the card holistically, because it may be worthwhile to pay the fee if there are other features you find to be valuable.

What is a go-to APR?

A go-to APR is the rate you pay once a 0% intro APR ends. The go-to rate can easily be 16% or more, so it’s in your best interest to work on paying off the balance before the introductory offer ends. That means paying considerably more than the minimum payment.

What is the average interest rate on a credit card?

Currently, the average interest rate on a credit card is just over 16%, with low interest cards at the bottom with just under 13% and bad credit at the highest with about 23.5%. Interest rates are variable and may change by the time the introductory period is over.
