Comparing Credit Card Offers for Excellent Credit

Updated: February 7, 2018

Here are the best credit cards for excellent credit in 2018:

Applicants with excellent credit are eligible for top credit card offers from issuers like Capital One, Chase, and American Express. Explore a wide array of superb cards right here on CreditCards.com; compare offers and apply today to begin earning rewards.

Cards that require excellent credit can be among the best in the market. They can also be among the most expensive by way of an annual fee (but not always). Travel cards, cashback cards, balance transfer cards – the options are plentiful. Want to learn more? Here, we look at:

  • What is an excellent credit score?
  • What determines an excellent credit score?
  • How to pick the best card for excellent credit?
  • How to keep my credit score excellent?

What is an excellent credit score?

When you have an excellent credit score, it means that you will likely get the best lending terms. On a range of 300-850, an exceptional FICO score is 800+, while an excellent VantageScore is 750+. You can expect to get the best lending products with a score of at least 750, regardless of the scoring model.

What determines an excellent credit score?

  1. Payment history. The most important aspect of your FICO credit score is whether you pay on time. With a long history of on-time payments, your score flourishes. But one late payment can cause your score to drop quickly, even to the next tier. This is also an extremely influential category for your VantageScore.
  2. Amount owed. The second most important element of your FICO score has to do with how much available credit you have compared to your debt, or your utilization ratio. You want to have a ratio as close to 0% as possible. The ratio is highly influential on your VantageScore. VantageScore also ranks your amount of debt as moderately influential.
  3. Length of credit history. How long the 3 major credit bureaus have had a file on you impacts your FICO score to a lesser degree. That’s why it’s to your advantage to hang on to your oldest credit card and keep the account active. This is highly influential on your VantageScore.
  4. New credit. One of the least important aspects of your scores, your credit can dip a bit temporarily when you apply for new credit. While there’s no reason to be alarmed about applying for a single card, you want to avoid applying for multiple cards in a short amount of time.
  5. Credit mix. Also least important for FICO, your score likes it when you have a mix of credit, such as revolving credit (credit cards) and installment loans (such as car loans or mortgages). This category is highly influential with VantageScore.

How to pick the best card for excellent credit?

  • What type of card do you want? Cards for excellent credit include all types of products – from travel rewards and cash back to balance transfers and more. And each type has different subcategories, including cards with quarterly categories and co-branded airline and hotel cards. Luxury cards are also available.
  • What’s the annual fee? Don’t forget to look at the annual fee, figure out how you plan to use the card, and study whether your use will offset the cost of the annual charge.
  • Is it a card you’ll use? Yes, a rewards card has advantages that can be hard to beat, but make sure it’s one you will actually use.
  • Weigh the pros and cons. Looking at the benefits, the fees and the interest rates, then decide if it’s a card you can embrace. For example, there may be a benefit such as an annual travel credit that makes a high annual fee worth it for you.

How to keep my credit score excellent?

  • Payment history. The best thing you can do for maintaining excellent credit is to pay on time, every time. It’s among the most influential of your scores.
  • Pay in full. To avoid paying interest charges and to keep your score healthy, pay in full each month.
  • Keep your card active. Place at least a small charge on your card each month (and pay it off). This will keep the account active and in good standing, which helps your credit in a number of ways, including keeping your available credit higher, which helps your utilization ratio stay lower.
  • Check your credit reports. Every 4 months, check one of your credit reports for inaccuracies. Have the credit bureau correct any errors that you find.
  • Research cards before applying. While having multiple cards can help your score because it can keep your utilization ratio lower if you have a balance, you don’t want to apply for multiple cards at once or apply for a card without ascertaining whether you have a good chance of getting it. That’s because credit scores care if you have taken out new credit.
  • Take out an installment loan. If you are paying off your card each month on time, it’s time to ramp things up a bit. Take out a small installment loan, such as a credit-builder loan or a car loan. This will give your credit score a little nudge.
