You know about the bonus, you know about points – but your card may offer other perks if you know what they are and use them when you need to.

1. Extended warranty

If that expensive gadget with a one-year warranty breaks on Day 366, don’t despair. Most cards offer extended warranties that double the manufacturer’s warranty on claims up to $10,000.

2. Travel benefits

When you purchase a flight, a cruise, or a train ride, make sure you use the right card. Some cards will reimburse you for hotel and meals due to a long delay, others will cover lost or damaged luggage. You may even qualify for trip reimbursement due to an illness without having to purchase expensive travel insurance.

3. Theft and damage protection

Lost your iPhone? Dropped your laptop? Did someone swipe your expensive wireless headphones? If you paid with a card, that was smart, as many issuers will reimburse you up to a certain amount for lost, damaged and stolen items within 90 days of purchase. Higher-end cards offer higher reimbursements.

These perks, while great, are not magic wands that cure every problem. Coverage varies greatly, and there are often limits and exclusions.

Still, the hidden perks in the fine print could end up being a big reason you’re grateful to have your credit card\u2026 even after you’ve used up your points.
