At the beginning of this year, U.S. Bank restructured the introductory offer for the Cash+™ Visa Signature card, transitioning to a higher cash bonus rather than an extra cash back percentage. This is great news for cardholders with a slightly lower monthly spend, who can now more easily earn one of the highest spend bonuses on a card with no annual fee – $150 if you spend $500 in the first 90 days.

Combining a generous sign-up offer with flexible bonus categories can get savvy spenders even more rewards out of this card.

What is the U.S. Bank Cash+ Visa worth in the first year?

With the Cash+ Visa, cardholders have the opportunity to tailor their rewards program to their needs by choosing two categories each quarter to earn 5 percent cash back. By strategically choosing categories where you already spend more money, you can get a great rewards rate. Here’s a quick look at what cardholders can earn in the first year.

Why use it?

The U.S. Bank Cash+ Visa offers more choice and flexibility than most of its competitors as well as a decent amount of cash back on everyday purchases.

Since users are limited to $2,000 in purchases in their 5 percent categories, meeting the full spend cap every quarter can help maximize cash back.

Fortunately, the sign-up bonus is relatively easy to reach, requiring cardholders to spend only $500 in 90 days. Many rewards cards require anywhere from $1,000-$3,000 to earn a welcome bonus, so the U.S. Bank offer is much more accessible.

Recent changes to the U.S. Bank Cash+ Visa

In January of this year, U.S. Bank transitioned the Cash+ Visa introductory offer away from an extra percentage in cash back the first year to a more traditional cash bonus.

  • $150 if you spend $500 in first 90 days

Previous

  • $100 if you spend $500 in first 3 months
  • Extra 0.5% cash back for first year of card membership ($2,000 quarterly cap on 5% category purchases)

With the old offer, cardholders could get a higher amount of cash back in the first year if they increased their monthly spending to meet the full spend cap each quarter. For users who wanted a competitive sign-up bonus without having to increase their spending, the new flat offer is still one of the highest available for cards of its class.

Who is eligible to earn the sign-up bonus?

The U.S. Bank Cash+ Visa requires applicants to have excellent credit (above 740) to qualify for the card. Only new accountholders are eligible to receive the sign-up bonus, so if you own or have previously owned a Cash+ Visa, you won’t be able to take advantage of the offer. U.S. Bank accountholders wishing to upgrade another card to the Cash+ Visa also aren’t eligible for the bonus.

Redemption options for the U.S. Bank Cash+ Visa

Once you’ve earned some cash back on your Cash+ Visa, there are a few different ways you can redeem it. You can opt for the traditional statement credit or choose a direct deposit into a U.S. Bank checking or savings account. You also have the option to put your cash back onto a rewards card, although you need a minimum of $20 to select this option.

Keep in mind that your rewards expire 36 months after the billing cycle they were earned, so you’ll want to redeem cash back fairly often to avoid losing it.

Should you apply for a U.S. Bank Cash+ Visa now?

Although the introductory offer for the Cash+ Visa changed at the beginning of this year, the new bonus amount has remained the same since. There is no rush to take advantage of a limited time offer with this card. However, with holiday shopping around the corner, it is a great time of year to meet the $500 spend threshold and earn some extra money while you buy presents.
