Mastercard Worldwide, the main operating subsidiary of Mastercard Inc., announced on April 9, 2007, that contactless technology developed with USA Technologies was being adopted by Coca-Cola Bottling Company United for use in its vending machines.Coca-Cola United will install USA Technologies’ e-Port G6 cashless payment units on vending machines to accept Mastercard’s PayPass contactless-payment system.
The contactless technology will enable consumers to tap their Mastercard PayPass credit card to complete a purchase, without requiring a signature. A flashing light and sounding of a tone indicate that the transaction is complete.
Vending machines equipped with the contactless technology will also accept traditional magnetic stripe credit card and debit card payments.
According to Mastercard and USA Technologies, the No. 3 U.S. Coca-Cola bottler will install the technology across its home market from Atlanta to Baton Rouge, La.
Previously, Mastercard reported deals for its contactless payment cards with Great Plains Coca-Cola Bottling and Cadbury Schweppes Americas Beverages. Meanwhile, contactless Mastercard products are also being tested for use at Ohio toll booths.
