Following its acquisition of Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc., Marriott International, Inc. has taken further steps to integrate its award-winning loyalty programs.
Following its acquisition of Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc., Marriott International Inc. has taken further steps to integrate its award-winning loyalty programs — Marriott Rewards, The Ritz-Carlton Rewards and Starwood Preferred Guest (SPG). As of Oct. 18, 2016, Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card by American Express card members are able to earn points at Marriott Rewards hotels, while Chase Marriott Rewards and Ritz-Carlton Rewards Chase card members are likewise able to earn points at participating SPG properties.
Expanded benefits to Chase and American Express co-brand card members
Marriott International is publicizing the move as a reciprocal opportunity designed to offer members increased earning potential as well as a greater selection of where to stay. “Today, we are giving loyalty card members more flexibility to earn points no matter where they stay with us,” Thom Kozik, vice president of loyalty at Marriott, explained in a press release. “By making our credit cards even more powerful and attractive for them, they’ll earn points more quickly and enjoy travel even sooner.”
With this change, U.S.-based American Express and Chase card members can now take advantage of the following benefits:
- Marriott Rewards Premier Credit Card from Chase members can earn five Marriott Rewards points per dollar on qualifying purchases at participating SPG properties.
- The Ritz-Carlton Rewards Credit Card from JPMorgan members can earn five Ritz-Carlton Rewards points per dollar on qualifying purchases at participating SPG properties.
- Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card by American Express members can earn two Starpoints per dollar on purchases at participating Marriott Rewards hotels.
The world’s largest hotel company
On Sept. 23, 2016, Marriott International Inc. completed its acquisition of Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide Inc., becoming the largest hotel chain in the world with more than 30 brands, 5,700 properties and over a million rooms around the globe. Marriott also began matching member status across Marriott Rewards, including The Ritz-Carlton Rewards and SPG, allowing members to link their accounts and transfer points between the programs. Other benefits offered to members include admission to exclusive “money-can’t-buy” experiences, access to more destinations, exclusive member rates and free Wi-Fi.
Arne Sorenson, president and CEO of Marriott International, stated in a press release, “Combining Starwood’s brand with ours better enables Marriott to reach our goal of having the right brand in the right place to serve our loyal guests and welcome new ones.”
Marriott plans to continue operating both programs at least through 2018, when it will eventually phase out SPG.
