Parents are willing to pay up to keep their children busy this summer, according to July’s American Express Spending & Saving Tracker
The most expensive activity is camp. Parents said they expect to spend an average of $329 per child on sleepaway camp and $314 on day camp, up from $252 for sleepaway camp and $219 on day camp in 2012. Meanwhile, the largest percentage increase among major summer activities came in educational and arts programs. Parents expect to spend 63 percent more on these activities this year, increasing from an average of $139 per child in 2012 to $227 this year.
For its survey, AmEx used the research firm Ebiquity to interview a random sample of 2,200 adults in the United States. The results for this portion of the survey have a 2.9 percent margin of error.
The chart below shows the top six summer activities parents expect to spend money on, and the average amount parents expected to spend per child.
