Is IHG elite status worth it?

For frequent travelers, perks like free Wi-Fi, priority check-in and exclusive member rates have a lot of value. But many of IHG’s elite status benefits go beyond the standard. Here’s a quick summary of the most valuable elite perks:

  • Free Amazon Kindle eBooks – As you advance through elite status tiers, IHG will cover the cost of more Kindle eBooks each quarter. You won’t have to worry about what to read next to the pool on your next stay.
  • Raid the Bar card – Available at Kimpton hotels, the Raid the Bar card gives eligible members complimentary mini bar access.
  • Room upgrades – Once you reach Platinum Elite status, you can enjoy a plushier room at no extra cost, whenever available.
  • Hertz Gold status – Spire Elite members are automatically granted Hertz Gold Plus Rewards® Five Star® status with the popular car rental company. This perk comes with one-car-class upgrades whenever available and bonus points on car rentals. If you often rent a car when you travel, the free upgrades and Hertz points can add up to great savings.
  • Complimentary night at new hotels – As an added bonus for Spire Elite members, you’ll earn a free night at new properties. That way, you can try out the latest IHG hotel without breaking the bank. (Note: these stays are subject to blackout dates.)

Shortcuts to IHG elite status

Even if you don’t meet the point or stay requirement for IHG elite status, you can enjoy the perks by signing up for an IHG Rewards Club credit card. IHG Rewards Club Premier cardholders are automatically granted Platinum Elite status.

IHG® Rewards Club Traveler Credit Card holders don’t receive automatic elite status, but you’ll only need to put $10,000 on the card a year to snag Gold Elite status.

Also, if you book rooms for yourselves or others through the IHG Business Rewards program, you can use the points from that program to accelerate your way to higher status.

Bottom line

Qualifying for IHG elite status is simple, and even the small perks like free Wi-Fi can make your next vacation more relaxed. Even Rewards Club members who do not meet stay or point requirements can enjoy elite status by signing up for the IHG Rewards Club Premier card.
