You don’t have to stay at an IHG hotel to rack up points.
IHG has thousands of properties in cities around the world, making it easy to plan your dream vacation with a stay at one of their hotels. But the nightly rate at high-end hotels such as the InterContinental in Sydney or the Kimpton Vero Beach Hotel and Spa will cost you.
If you are hoping to rack up enough IHG points to cover a night at a luxury property, there are plenty of ways to get there. On top of great rewards for stays at IHG hotels, Rewards Club members can earn points for dining, filling out surveys and much more. Check out these eight ways to earn IHG points to learn more.
Top 8 ways to earn IHG points
Chase offers two co-branded IHG Rewards Club credit cards, both of which include generous sign-up bonuses and great reward rates on IHG hotel stays. If you are hoping to multiply your rewards earning, you might consider signing up for one of these offers.
IHG® Rewards Club Traveler Credit Card
IHG® Rewards Club Premier Credit Card
|Sign-up bonus||75,000 points if you spend $2,000 in first 3 months|
|Estimated yearly rewards value ($1,325 monthly spend)||$221||$426|
The sign-up bonuses alone on either of the IHG cards are enough for a free night reward in one of IHG’s highest-tiered properties.
Both cards also offer bonus points on gas, grocery and dining purchases on top of IHG hotel stays, opening up new categories to earn IHG rewards. Plus, you can stack rewards with other ways of earning points. For instance, if you have your card linked to the IHG Rewards Club Dining program and eat at a participating restaurant, you’ll earn 2 points per dollar with your IHG credit card as well as the bonus points offered through the dining program.
2. Stay at an IHG brand hotel
The most common way to earn IHG Rewards Club points is on qualifying stays at IHG properties. You’ll earn 10 points for every dollar you spend on stays at most IHG brands (Staybridge Suites and Candlewood Suites only earn 5 points per dollar).
If you have elite status with the chain, you can boost your rewards earning even further. Each elite status tier earns a percentage of bonus points on top of base points for hotel stays, broken down below.
|Elite status tier||Bonus points earned|
|Gold Elite member||10%|
|Platinum Elite member||50%|
|Spire Elite member||100%|
3. Groupon purchases
Thanks to a partnership between IHG and Groupon, you can also earn up to 10 IHG points per dollar on purchases made on the popular deal site. You’ll not only save on dining and unique experiences with a Groupon, but get one step closer to your next IHG reward night.
4. IHG Rewards Club Dining
With the IHG Rewards Club Dining program, you can also earn IHG points on dining purchases. The program allows members to link credit and debit cards and earn bonus points for purchases at participating restaurants, automatically. There are hundreds of locations that offer rewards, so be sure you check the program site before dining out.
5. A Greener Stay
If you stay at a participating IHG hotel for at least two consecutive nights, you can earn bonus points for declining housekeeping services. As part of the greener stay program, IHG Rewards Club members earn 500 points for conserving water and energy.
6. Customer surveys
For IHG Rewards Club members with a bit of spare time on their hands, customer surveys can help rack up rewards points. By joining the Opinion Check-In program and completing your first survey, you’ll automatically earn 1,000 points. Plus, you’ll get additional points when you fill out more surveys.
7. Bonus point packages
IHG regularly releases special offers for its members, including bonus points for booking an activity in your vacation destination (1,000 points per booking) or for staying at certain properties on certain dates. You’ll want to keep a close eye on IHG’s website for limited-time deals.
8. Buy IHG points
Like many rewards programs, IHG also allows members to purchase extra points to top off a balance. However, you’ll want to consider the point value carefully before choosing this option. We value IHG points at 0.55 cents per point when redeemed for a free night reward. When you buy points, you’ll pay between 0.65 cents and 1.35 cents per point. Though you get a better value by buying a larger number of points, you are always paying more than they are worth. Unless you are just shy of being able to redeem a reward and need points in a pinch, stick to earning IHG points another way.
If you are saving up IHG Rewards Club points for a longer stay or a free night at a luxury hotel, consider other options for racking up IHG points. Beyond points earned for hotel stays, you can earn points on dining, experiences, surveys and more. If you sign-up for an IHG Rewards Club credit card, you can earn points on the spending you do every day.
