Capital One offers a wide range of rewards cards, including cards for business and personal use. Whether you are looking for a card with no annual fee or one with more premium rewards, Capital One has a product available. Arguably one of the issuer’s most useful rewards are the Capital One miles that you can use for travel, statement credit, gift cards and more.

While Capital One also offers several cash back credit cards, you can only earn, redeem and transfer miles on its travel credit cards. Here’s a quick breakdown of your options:

Rewards cards with no annual fee

Among its rewards card offerings, Capital One includes two options with no annual fee. If you are eager to start earning Capital One miles but aren’t yet ready to spend $95 a year, the VentureOne and Spark Miles Select cards are good places to start.

With the VentureOne card, your general rewards rate is a bit lower – at just 1.25 miles per dollar – compared to the Venture Rewards, but there’s no annual fee.

Business owners can also get great rewards with no annual fee using the Spark Miles Select. This card has a great flat rewards rate that makes it easy to earn rewards on all your business purchases. The biggest drawback with choosing the Spark Miles Select over the Spark Miles card is the much lower sign-up bonus. With a value of 1 cent per mile, the Spark Miles Select intro offer is only worth $200, whereas the Spark Miles offer is worth $500.

Premium Capital One rewards cards

If you are willing to spend a bit more on an annual fee, Capital One also offers two cards with more premium rewards.

The Venture Rewards card is among the most popular travel credit cards, with a straightforward rewards-earning scheme and generous sign-up bonus. Cardholders who spend $4,000 in the first three months of account opening earn 75,000 bonus miles – worth $750 in travel. You’ll also earn 2 miles per dollar on every purchase you make and 5 miles per dollar spent on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel. This makes the Venture card one of the most rewarding options for frequent travelers.

On the more luxurious side, the Venture X card really rakes in the rewards, bringing in 10 miles per dollar on hotel and rental car bookings and 5 miles per dollar on flights done through Capital One Travel. On all other purchases, the card still brings in 2 miles per dollar. The card’s major attraction: the sign-up bonus of 75,000 miles if you spend $4,000 in the first 3 months, amounting to $750 in travel. The spending goal is hefty, but if that’s right within your usual spending range the Venture X and its generous rewards structure will make it worth your while.

Business owners can also earn great rewards with the Spark Miles for Business. Its 2X miles may seem modest compared to the premium travel cards, but it’ll still earn a steady stream of rewards throughout the year, especially since Capital One doesn’t limit the number of miles you can earn with this card. As for a welcome bonus, cardholders who spend $4,500 in the first three months of account opening earn 50,000 bonus miles.

With the Venture X, Venture Rewards and Spark Miles for Business, you can transfer your miles to Capital One’s over 15 travel partners, including Air France-KLM, British Airways and Wyndham Rewards. Like many other travel cards on the market, these cards also do not charge any foreign transaction fees. These cards also have no limit on the number of miles you can earn in a year (a huge perk for big spenders and travelers).

Cash back rewards cards

While they do not earn you miles that can be used in the Travel Center or that can be transferred to an airline partner, Capital One also offers a slew of cash back cards. If cash rewards are more your speed, Capital One probably offers a product suited to your needs.

How many Capital One cards can you have?

Like many issuers, Capital One limits the number of credit cards you can have open at one time. According to the terms and conditions of cards, you are ineligible for a new card if you have five or more open credit card accounts with Capital One or if you have applied for a Capital One credit card two or more times in the last 30 days. User experience shows, though, that you can typically only get two personal Capital One credit cards at a time. When you apply for a new Capital One credit card, also be sure any existing Capital One accounts are in good standing.

How to apply for a Capital One card

All the Capital One mile-earning cards require applicants to have a good to excellent credit score (above 670). Before you apply for a new Capital One rewards card, check out your credit history to make sure it is where you need it to be. You can request one credit report every 12 months from each of the three major credit bureaus through AnnualCreditReport.com. And due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the credit bureaus are offering free credit reports every week through April 2022.

If you are still worried about being approved and don’t want to risk a hard inquiry on your credit, you can use tools such as CardMatch™ to check whether you prequalify without impacting your credit score.

Which Capital One travel credit card should you apply for?

Deciding between whether you want a card for business or personal use will help narrow down your choices. Then, choose whether an annual fee is worth paying given a particular card’s rewards and benefits. If you plan to spend enough on your card to earn the sign-up bonus, you’ll likely do best with the Venture Rewards card for personal use or the Spark Miles for Business.
