American Express has announced the launch of the American Express® Business Gold Card. The new card gives cardholders four points per dollar on the top two categories where their businesses spend the most each month, on the first $150,000 each calendar year. All other purchases earn one point per dollar.
According to Courtney Kelso, head of U.S. commercial card products at American Express, “We understand that business owners want a simple way to earn rewards that are customized to the way they do business.”
The bonus rate is offered in the following spend categories:
- Airfare purchased directly from airlines
- U.S. purchases at restaurants
- U.S. purchases for advertising in select media (online, TV and radio)
- U.S. purchases at gas stations
- U.S. purchases made directly from select technology providers of computer hardware, software and cloud solutions
- U.S. purchases for shipping
The Business Gold card also offers a variety of perks, including a 25-percent bonus on eligible airline purchases booked through American Express Travel using Membership Rewards Pay with Points, as well as the option to pay for large purchases over time with interest.
Comparing AmEx Business Gold cards
You may be wondering what the differences are between the new American Express Business Gold Card and the previous Business Gold Rewards Card from American Express OPEN. For starters, the cards offer different rewards rates, annual fees and welcome bonuses.
See how they compare in the table below.
|New offer||Previous offer|
American Express® Business Gold Card
The Business Gold Rewards Card from American Express OPEN
|Annual fee||$295||$175, waived first year|
As you can see, while the new Business Gold card offers a higher rewards rate, it also offers a substantially higher annual fee and does not provide a 50,000-point introductory bonus. That said, with the addition of the free G Suite Basic and ZipRecruiter Standard one-year memberships – which, according to American Express, has a combined value of up to $3,188 – you can get more value from the American Express Business Gold card if you take advantage of both of those benefits.
Value of welcome bonuses
|Value of G Suite Basic and ZipRecruiter Standard one-year membership||Value of 50,000 bonus points|
|$3,188||50,000 points x 1.19 cents = $595|
By contrast – since we estimate each Business Gold card point to be worth 1.19 cents – the 50,000-point bonus is valued at approximately $595.
Should you apply?
If you are a business owner who spends heavily in at least two of the six categories listed above, you can benefit greatly from the Business Gold card’s generous rewards rate. For example, let’s say your company maxes out the $150,000 yearly bonus earning cap by spending $12,500 each month on air travel and media advertising. By the end of the year, you stand to earn 600,000 points – equaling out to approximately $7,140 in rewards value. Just keep in mind that the card requires a big upfront commitment, since the pricey $295 annual fee isn’t waived the first year.
If you are an existing Business Gold Rewards card from American Express OPEN member who wants to take advantage of the Business Gold card’s benefits, you must request to be transferred to the new card.
