Here are the details:

  • $10 or 5% of cash advance, whichever is greater
  • 3% of foreign transactions in US dollars

  • The Citi Diamond Preferred excels in offering a very extended introductory APR rate. 21 months is the current max for popular balance transfer cards. To make matters sweeter, the offer is available for both purchases and balance transfers.
  • Fees and regular APR offered by this card are average compared to other cards.
  • As with most cards, you run the risk of losing your introductory rates when you do not make your payments on time or meet your minimums.
  • While the card itself doesn’t offer anything extraordinary outside of the extended introductory rate, what is extraordinary is that you receive premium benefits or, what Citi refers to as “VIP treatment” with this card (see below). Given this unique mix, this might be the ideal card to use for that special splurge trip, unforgettable night out, or special purchase.

  • It’s rare to see what can be called a balance transfer card come with the same kind of perks as a travel rewards card. Not only does the Diamond Preferred offer those perks, it offers premium variations, including:
    • 24/7 Concierge Service, assisting you in booking flights, finding restaurants, hotels, etc. This is one of those perks that lends the Diamond Preferred its distinguished air.
    • Citi Private Pass, which allows you access to presale tickets (concerts, sports, shows, family events, you name it), VIP packages, preferred seating, special events like breakfast with your favorite sports star or wine tastings, and more. Again, this is another special perk.
    • Citi Easy Deals, which offers access to travel, merchandise, and gift card deals unique to Citi customers. Over 300,000 deals, to be exact.
    • Free personalization, including choosing the payment due date that works best for you, on top of tailoring your alerts so that you’re on top of what matters most to you regarding your finances
    • $0 Liability on unauthorized charges
    • Citi Identity Theft Solutions,
    • Apple Pay, for secure, easy, and fast in-app payments at over 200,000 locations that accept it
    • Extended Warranty, for up to a year on warranties lasting 5 years or less on purchases up to $10,000, with exceptions
    • Purchase Protection, for up to $1,000 per item, up to $50,000 per year for certain lost or stolen items
    • Worldwide Car Insurance, which applies for any rental car, in any country, for up to $50,000 when you decline the company’s collision loss/damage insurance
    • Trip Cancellation Protection, if you have an emergency interruption to your trip and any part of your trip payment is non-refundable, Citi may reimburse you for those expenses for up to $1,500 a year, as long as you paid for the entirety of your trip with your Citi Diamond Preferred
    • Worldwide Travel Accident Insurance, which consists of up to $250,000 in compensation, provided you paid for your trip using your Citi Diamond Preferred
    • 24/7 Travel & Emergency Assistance for arrangements, travel issues, medical or legal referrals, etc, available in any language
    • EMV Chip Technology, which ensures a more secure, encrypted transaction, as well as wider acceptance of your card when you travel abroad.

Areas of Limitation:

For anyone carrying a balance and really focused on paying it off, the extra benefits of the Diamond Preferred may be seen as distractions. Those who feel this way will be happy to note that in fact, Citi offers two of the best balance transfer cards around, the other being the Diamond Preferred’s sibling, the Citi Simplicity, which boasts no late fees and no penalty rates on top of no annual fee and the same roomy 21-month, 0% APR introductory period.

Not a lot of balance transfer cards with an extended introductory rate will offer the same perks as the Citi Diamond Preferred MasterCard. The Citi Diamond Preferred is a solid balance transfer card offering great service and deals on special occasion, travel, events, and merchandise that its cardholders will be sure to enjoy, positioned uniquely alongside its spacious introductory rates.
