Barclaycard Arrival™ World MasterCard® Review

Last update: February 11, 2015

The Barclaycard Arrival has a reputation for being a card conveniently geared towards the wayfaring enthusiast. With its bonus rewards on travel and dining, stellar sign up bonus, no foreign transaction fees, and reward travel that leads to more reward travel, it's really not hard to see why. Here are the basics:

Sign up bonus 20,000 bonus miles when you spend $1,000 in your first 90 days
Rewards
  • 2x miles on travel & dining, 1x miles on all other purchases
  • 10% miles back when you redeem miles for travel
APR
  • 14.99% or 18.99% APR (variable) on purchases
  • 0% intro APR for 12 months on balance transfers made within the first 45 days of account opening
  • 25.24% APR on cash advances
Annual Fees $0
Credit Needed Excellent
Fees
  • 0% foreign transaction fees
  • $5 or 3% of the balance transfer, whichever is greater
  • $10 or 5% of the cash advance, whichever is greater
  • Up to $37 penalty fee for late or returned payments

Details:

  • The rewards are issued per $1 spent. So, you're getting 2 miles per dollar you spend on travel and dining, and 1 mile per dollar for everything else.
  • 20,000 miles is the equivalent of $200 in travel statement credit—that's a great sign-up bonus!
  • You get an extra 10% woth of miles every time you redeem miles for travel credit. This means if you've decided to use those 50,000 miles you've saved up for your big trip, you'd still be getting 5,000 of those points back to use in the future. These bonus miles post to your account within one business day after processing your initial travel redemption.
  • You must redeem your rewards within 120 days of your travel purchase, with a minimum value of $25.
  • Miles never expire and there are no limits on the amount of miles you can accrue, as long as your account is active and in good standing.
  • If you choose to redeem for cash back, which comes in the form of a statement credit, it's important to note that the credit will apply to your account balance, but the credit will not count towards your minimum payment.
  • To take advantage of the 12-month, 0% introductory APR, balance transfers must be made within 45 days of your account opening

Special Notes:

  • You have free access to your FICO score at the discretion of Barclaycard. It's not an actual fixed feature of your card, but you can access this online as long as you've had activity on the card within the past 150 days.
  • There's a great tool on the Arrival's site that allows you to take a look at your estimated rewards earnings for a 3-month window. This will help you maximize your rewards.
  • Barclaycard provides a free FICO score on your statement to help you manage your credit!
  • You have access to the Barclaycard Travel Community, a wonderfully curated collective of interesting and intrepid featured travel destinations that will delight globe-trekkers of all kinds. While the site has plenty of features, including deals, maps, blogs, and statistics on travel costs, the main draw is being able to receive feedback, swap stories, and tips from other sightseers for places on or off the grid— whatever your tastes are.
  • Cardholders may receive World Mastercard® benefits, which include:
    • Complimentary concierge service
    • Baggage delay insurance
    • Travel accident insurance
    • Trip cancellation insurance
    • Secondary auto rental collision damage waiver
    • Travel advisors
    • Mastercard® Global Service, accessible 24/7 and ready to assist you with your emergency travel needs
    • Extended warranty
    • Purchase protection

Areas of Limitation:
If you're not someone who dines out or travels very often, this card is not going to be of much use as a rewards card for you. There are other cards with bonus categories or higher cash back base rewards that you may feel are more applicable to your lifestyle.

Summary:
The Barclaycard Arrival World Mastercard is a card for the frequent traveler who will enjoy a great sign-up bonus, no annual fees, Mastercard benefits, and further incentives to travel in the form of an added rewards feature that allows cardholders to earn more rewards by redeeming them. Those interested in transferring a balance may also enjoy a 12-month introductory period of 0% APR as a respite from their current interest rates. Altogether, the Barclaycard Arrival is a solid travel rewards option.
