MasterCard releases 'ATM Hunter' app for iPhone

By Seamus McAfee

The age-old problem of finding a nearby ATM may now be resolved -- worldwide -- thanks to a new application for the Apple iPhone.

The free ATM Hunter application, developed by MasterCard, is now available through Apple's iTunes Store. The app will allow iPhone users to enter in an address or airport location to locate the nearest machine, while iPhone 3G users can find their location automatically with the GPS on their device. The app can narrow down choices of ATMs, such as those that can accept deposits, those from the consumer's own bank -- which can reduce withdrawal fees -- or ATMs at banks with drive-through or wheelchair-accessible features.

In addition, MasterCard's app will tell the user if an ATM is a bank ATM or an ATM in a local store, and the money dispenser's exact location, if, for instance, it's hidden in the back of a grocery store or gas station. iPhone users can then share their ATM locations with others using SMS text messaging, and receive tips on how to be safer while using ATMs.

MasterCard said the ATM Hunter is the first in a series of free applications that the credit card network will be developing for iPhone and the iPod touch.
