Infographic: How we spend our gift cards
By Juan Rodriguez and Kristie Aronow
Gift cards don't tend to gather much dust in our wallets, according to a survey released June 18 by the Retail Gift Card Association.
According to the poll of 1,000 respondents, more than 70 percent redeem their cards within the first three months of receipt. Fifty percent of gift-card recipients buy something practical or apply the card's balance to a larger purchase. Another 31 percent splurge on items they wouldn't normally buy. Almost half the survey respondents said they tend to stay within the preset gift amount when they spend the gift cards, but 39 percent apply the card to a more expensive purchase.
